WWE mixing up all pay-per-views

March 18, 2007
BY BLACKJACK BROWN
In a move that some think is two years late, WWE has decided to drop the idea of brand-only pay-per-view events and will mix talent from its ''Raw,'' ''SmackDown'' and ECW rosters at all future pay-per-view shows. The mixed-brand shows are not only more entertaining, but they have proved to draw significantly more viewers. The Bobby Lashley vs. Mr. Kennedy and Batista/Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels/John Cena main events at the most recent ''No Way Out'' show were the deciding experiment. Those cross-brand matches were the show stealers, and quite frankly the main reasons to buy the shows.

AROUND THE RING: WWE Hall of Fame wrestler/manager ''Golden Boy'' Arnold Skaaland died Tuesday night at age 82. ... Edge suffered a broken jaw three weeks ago in a match with Rob Van Dam, which is why he has been out of action the last few weeks.

I disagree. All this is going to do is:

a) give lower-card workers fewer opportunities to get over, meaning it'll be harder to build up new stars, and
b) give fans the same main events month after month, meaning they'll get bored of feuds a lot quicker.

There are enough stars on RAW and SmackDown! to sell a PPV, provided the undercard is good enough. The problem is, WWE only hypes up the main event (which is often a match a lot of fans won't want to see anyway) and ignores the rest of the card. Build up some decent midcard feuds, between decent midcard wrestlers, and people would buy the shows.

They should just do a full-scale redraft after WrestleMania, to make sure each brand has enough name stars and talented workers to put together a decent show.
