Chris Cornell

Don't care if it's soundgarden or audioslave... he rocks it out... and he's one of the coolest people... EVER!

Now, not many great ones to choose from. Cornell, Eddie Vedder, or Dave Wyndorf from Monster Magnet.

All-time? For me, between Freddie Mercury and Axl Rose.

Plus, technically, you could say Prince is a frontman, and a DAMN good one.

Gotta go with Axl Rose and Prince.

Axl, what can you say about him, he is the epitome of what a rock n roll frontman should be. Charismatic, Crazy energy, KNOWS how to rock a crowd, knows when to let his band members shine, and is instantly recognizable in his role.

You can say the same things about Prince, a little less obviously though as he's just as often seen as a frontman/bandleader (The Revolution, Lovesexy Band, New Power Generation) as he is as a solo artist.

As for Chris Cornell....well... I agree he was good in Soundgarden, but when it comes to being on stage with Tom, Brad and Tim C, he ain't got shit on Zach De La Rocha.

Me too.

Axl's got nothing on Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, or Freddie Mercury. He knows when to let his band members shine? Then how come no member of the original G'n'R lineup wants to have anything to do with him anymore?

As for the best frontman now I'll probably go with Vedder.

He's boring though, he never does anything on stage.

For me my fav front man is Richard ashcroft. Im talking The verve 1992/93/94 i dont know if any of you peeps have ever seen any footage of the verve around this time, but they did'nt call him Mad richard for nothing! he was of his fuckin rocker! He used to get so lost in his music, it reallly was like watching a man possesed.

Nobody who know who Slash, Izzy, Duff et al even are if it wasn't for Axl. And you don't know what you are talking about, actually, as Izzy Stradlin reunited with Axl at Download Festival 2 weeks ago here in the UK. And Slash has said he potentially would do it. Dizzy Reed is still playing with GNR too.

Axl is a bonafide star chasrismatically, more than Robert Plant or Roger Daltrey - not necessarily saying he's more talented, but he was definately a born superstar.

If you have ever seen his famous awards performance of 'November Rain' you would most certainly be able confirm that. Or just look at the video for "Welcome To The Jungle". Totally blew things apart at the time.

If your name is just as recognizable as your band name, then you have something really special as a frontman.

A frontman like Roger Daltrey isnt as instantly recognizable name-wise than if you said "The Who". Axl Rose is as recognizable a name as Guns N Roses, same with Ozzy and Black Sabbath, Freddie Mercury and Queen, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana....etc etc etc.

I don't need to defend Axl, you guys have done a good job, but I'd even put Freddie ahead of him. There's a reason Axl, Plant, and Daltrey were all at Freddie's Tribute concert years and years ago to pay homage.

This is commanding attention, this is slaying the crowd (and the cameraman), this is Live Aid, and this....is "Hammer to Fall". Freddie at his peak.

Slash was probably as crucial as Axl for the success of G'n'R, and if not with them, he probably would have made it regardless, with some other band. Can't say that for every other member of G'n'R, I'll give you that.

OK, didn't know about Izzy palying at a GnR gig recently. But when did Slash say that he'd consider reuniting?

"The band will be eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame beginning in 2012. Critics and fans alike view this as an opportunity for the bands' original lineup to reunite. On the VH1 special, Behind the Music, Slash was questioned about a reunion and stated that "No matter how much money they throw in our faces, there's no reason for us to get together...unless there's a mutual respect or understanding...and we're way far from that."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guns_n_roses

Has anything changed since he stated this?

And I guess you could consider Dizzy an original member, but when refering to the original lineup, I meant the 1985-90 lineup, before they added a keyboard player.

I see where you're coming from, but the title of the topic doesn't ask "who's name is just as recognizable as the band's name," but who's the best. Being more known doesn't neccessarily mean that you're better. Kurt Cobain's name is more known than that of David Gilmour or Jimmy Page. Does that make him a better guitarist?

I do think that Axl was/as a charismatic performer, but IMO he's nowhere as talented as Plant, Daltrey, Mercury, who all also were charismatic performers, and all around they are better frontmen.
