Dante or Ken would be able to tell us more about Endorphin, but as far as I know it's a natural pain killer that our brain produces. I can feel the rush and it's about 1/4 of an orgasm. Hot water is the best way for me because it causes the least amout of damage to my body. It would be best if you have a faucet that takes a while for the hot water to come out because the pain comes gradually. Your heart rate will rise and it feels good.

Try it at home.

One question I have is - do cutters or people that cut themselves do it for this same rush or is it totally unrelated?

PS. props to carmi for sparking an idea with her finger burnt thread. And dont worry, I do this on a rare occasion. I have sensitive skin and the itch is out fo this world. Burning doesnt help but it feels good.

Endorphin can be brought on by good feeling one gets from eating chocolate, smiling, laughing, sunbathing, being massaged, meditating, singing, listening to one's favorite music, or having an orgasm is partially attributed to the release of endorphins. (source: Wiki)

You don't need to burn your fingers or cut your wrists unless your an emo.

Funny you say that because that quote reminds me of a line by Al Pacino in Devil's Advocate - "[love is] overrated. no different than eating large amounts of chocolate".. although no amount of chocolate can equal to the satisfaction you get from blowing your load.

As for my situation, it has to do with my skin. It feels horrible. I wake up in the middle of the night and there's nothing I can do to stop the itch, so I result to hot water. I guess I'll get the usual "go see a doctor" thing but I've had this condition since I was a baby and there isn't much they can do. It runs in the family and my mom is worse. She's gotten an allergic reaction from certain lotion/cream.

Anyway, do people cut themselves for this rush?

You need to get psychologically evaluated.
I did that a few years back. I talked to a psychologist for an hour, well, he was listening to me talk for an hour. He gave me Zoloft and told me to come back in 6 months. I stopped taking the damn pills because it didn't help and I had constant diarrhea from it.
