When you really think about it, you see a difference. 'White boy' and 'black boy' are not the same. Context is important, institutional racism exists and the structures of power in the white world are white, so there can never be anything besides a double standard. The word 'boy' when used towards a black person carries historical power-related connotations, while 'white boy' has arisen whilst black people do not have the balance of power in their favor, so it is not an oppressive term intended to keep a white man down by reducing him to the level of a 'boy.' The word's historical connotations are everything, the word 'boy' means two different things when connected to either of the words, 'white' or 'black.'Synful*Luv said:However, when you really stop and think about it, it is and should be considered offensive I think.
I know if someone came up to me, like "Hey Black Girl" that wouldn't fly over well with me. But for some reason a lot of people seem real lax about it, like "I don't care" "I've always been called that" etc. That doesn't make it okay though. Yeah, I know it's a double standard, but that doesn't mean that if it offends you, you have to accept it.
