it depends on the car. because if you have like say a 2000 camaro SS with a LS1, you dont need to past the redline at 6000rpm. you can shift before because you got low end torque and the you wont make any more horsepower past the redline. but now lets say, an acura nsx. its not known for low end torque. youre better off taking it just a bit past the redline so you get the best acceleration possible.

That's pretty true, in terms of their straightline acceleration capabilities. A lot of manufacturers are making beefed-up automatic transmissions (and I'm talking about true automatics, not the DSG or SMG type of auto-manuals) that are shifting pretty damn quickly with five, six, even seven gears in some applications. However, automatics are still at a disadvantage on a road courses and autocross tracks.

thats true. just look at the SRT line and the AMG line. all have automatics, but haul major ass. hell, look at the bugatti veyron. 7 speed sequential transmission IIRC.

Sequentials are the best 'boxes. Usually they come without a clutch pedal but I wouldn't call racing cars automatics

And IIRC means If I Recall Correctly. It's not some obscure car term

honestly i don't look at my RPMs when i'm shifting, i go strickly on sound. i had a car for many many many years that didn't have a tach so i learned not to look at it.
