Retarded. Comes from the word "Tard" meaning "slow" in latin. There is no word known as 'retarted'.
....."Tard" is not a word in latin - it's a root to Tardo, Tardare meaning to be slow.
For male it's - tardus
female - tarda
it - tardum.
Tard(y);
2: Slow, Sluggish
[Alteration of Middle English tardive, slow, from Old French tardif, from Vulgar Latin *tardvus, from Latin tardus.]
.....
Is it a Latin dictionary or English dictionary giving a definition of Tardy which indeed means slow etc.?
Tard is just a root of word. You can't tell a definition of Tard because it's not a word. As I said Tardus is somebody slow if he's a male. Tardo means to be slow. You can't translate it straight into english as in english roots of words usually have their meanings. In Latin translating any root is just wrong.
The English language is made from Latin.
yeah I know that but it differs a lot. I've been studying latin for 5 years.
What I meant is Tard is an English word that came from a Latin word.
yeah so we misunderstood each other. I was trying to proove that there is no latin word like "tard" - It was formed from "tardus" and "converted" into english in shorter form.
