Police: Mom Drops Newborn In Chute, Kills Her
18-Year-Old Charged With Murder

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- An Iowa woman was charged with killing her newborn daughter by tossing her down a hotel trash chute from the seventh floor, police said.

Ashley Truitt, 18, of Solon, Iowa, was being held on Monday without bond on one count of murder, Broward County sheriff's officials said.

Truitt told police she hid her pregnancy from her parents and boyfriend. They were all staying at the Wyndham Resort on Saturday when authorities found a bloody knife in the hallway and the newborn's body in a trash bin, sheriff's officials said.

Truitt said she gave birth in the bathroom, using a kitchen knife to cut the umbilical cord. She then put the baby in a plastic bag with some bath towels and threw it down the trash chute, authorities said.

An autopsy performed on Sunday found the newborn died from blunt trauma to the head, likely from being dropped in the trash chute.

A phone message left at the Truitt family's home in Iowa was not immediately returned on Monday.

i understand that this isn't a new trend, they were finding newborns in dumpsters and left in bathrooms since i was back in high school, but how can a woman do something like this to her own child? RIP

hey, like i said in the first post, i know it's not exactly a new trend, but it seems to be happening more and more these days. i just can't figure how someone could do that to a newborn. if you didn't want the kid, there are better options than dropping it down a trash chute or tossing it in a dumpster

probably not even close to a life sentence either. more likely, 5 years or less, as fucked up as that sounds, but that would be my guess.

more than likely, yes. i know i think that's what she deserves, but i also know she won't get anywhere near that.

I don't agree, jail isn't the answer (atleast not for the rest of her life). She needs to be in constant care, she needs to come to the realization as to why she did it, and even though jail will give her a lot of time to think about that, she needs more then just time to help her think about her actions.

see, this is why she won't get more than 5 years, because there are so many damn bleeding hearts out there who think that instead of punishing her for murder, we should try to "help" her. she knew what she was doing, she deliberately murdered her own child, she belongs behind bars.
