Non-Urban Music What else is going on this year?

Beck - Guero
Coldplay - X&Y
The Decemberists - Picaresque
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
System of a Down - Mesmerize
The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

I haven't liked this many rock albums in one six-month period in a long time. I'm assuming there's other good stuff going around that I haven't heard. Any recommendations?

I don't like:
* Weezer's last album
* That discopunk/new-wave revival shit
* The new Foo Fighters single

As far as this year so far (rap excluded), I dug Audioslave's "Be Yourself" single, but the album Out of Exile was pretty underwhelming, a really muddled, bland record, with a couple really good songs on it.

Mezmerize is record of the year right now, "Revenga" alone rocks harder than any "Killers", "Chemical Romance" song you ever heard (speaking of which, this glam/emo/bleeding heart "rock" muzak is just pathetic. The Killers? I'm supposed to be into this???).

I haven't been into a Beck record since Midnite Vultures, though the song he did for the Eternal Sunshine soundtrack was pretty good. Queens... is a good band, good record, not really up to my expectations, and Coldplay is garbage. I haven't heard the White Stripes new record yet, but "Blue Orchid" didn't sound very appealing to me.

Stevie Wonder's new record is going to be great, I love that guy. "From the Bottom of My Heart" is a great single, and he's got Prince on this record, FUCKIN' A!

Pretty weak year so far, IMO.

The Killers have nothing to do with emo at all.

I don't really know which emo you're talking about, though. The original emo (At the Drive-In, Fugazi, etc.), or the acoustic-crying shit?

The new single is pretty corny... but I still like it.

AudioSlave have been awesome this year.
I don't mind oasis's new single, though nothing will top tracks from (what's the story)morning glory, in my books anyway.
System of a down was great this year as well. Mesmerise did mesmerise me.

Killer's were attributed to the glam part I was talking about, they remind me of Kraftwerk or some totally overproduced soulless music put out in the 80's heyday. It's no wonder they were the headlining band at that eMpty-tv special with Microsoft the other day.

What Stevie single are you talking about? There are two out there, "So What the Fuss" is the one getting major play, the one with the video. It's kinda cliche, but catchy in it's own way. Stevie hasn't really made a good album since Songs in the Key of Life (even that would have been better as a single disc), the 80's weren't good to him, but he's still able to wipe the floor with these "R&B" singers of today.

I absolutely hate the term emo. I use to refer to groups like At The Drive in, Atreyu, Fugazi, etc as emo.. but I mean... how can anything you put your heart and soul into, not be emotional??

:thumb:

and it will continue to be the album of the year until their second album of the year comes out late summer "Hypnotize"

Serj from System is working with a cd full of Buckethead instrumentals and is supposedly gonna work with them, put various people on them like Saul Williams and others, that should be worth checkin out too if it comes out this year.

and then theres the long awaited Zack De La Rocha solo cd

and thats about it, you can basically thank System for putting out two cd's this year because theres not gonna be much else.

The rest of the album is nothing like Blue Orchid. My Doorbell is my favourite track off it. My Doorbell is straight up soul. Reminds me almost of the Jackson 5, in a good way.

Haven't heard it.... it's not all poppy is it?
No, in fact it's Norweigan Doom Metal. They switched their style up.

The Brendan Benson album dropped, that was cool. Not great, but good.

Heard good things about the Art Brut, Turin Brakes and Sleater-Kinney albums. I might buy them, once I've heard some of them.

Stevie's record comes out on the 21st, according to cduniverse.com.

As far as the new White Stripes record, I listened to it on Rhapsody, and the album isn't really turning out to be my cup of tea, Instinct Blues and maybe Red Rain are the only tracks I could get into, kind of Zepp-ish tracks. Even for as short as it was, Passive Manipulation is a terrible "song", and I can't say it enough, Meg White CANNOT keep a beat whatsoever.

Dude, you can't front on Plants. And I disagree on Songs in the Key of Life, that's one of the few double albums whose size is justified.

Serj from System is working with a cd full of Buckethead instrumentals and is supposedly gonna work with them,
I'm not a fan of Saul Williams but this project should be nothing short of :O. I still haven't heard that Armenian folk or whatever album he did, but I want to.

and then theres the long awaited Zack De La Rocha solo cd
I'll believe it when I'm holding it in my hands. If it's anything like that "March of Death" joint, though, I'd rather he keep it to himself.

Hopefully Stevie magically does Usher numbers and singers everywhere kick hip-hop producers out of their studios. R&B hasn't been pulling its weight in years.

Even Stevie's double disc could have used trimming. EVERY double disc could be better as a single disc, even 'Pac's, even BIG's, even The Beatles White Album could've been tighter. I don't know, I'm not one to root for overindulgence, I think musicians should make the tightest, best, most explosive music they can, double albums are just overindulgent to me.

R&B is already pretty much dead (aside from a few shining stars, IE Saadiq), and we all have the "New Jack Swing" craze to thank for that.
