Fashion-conscious Virginians are being warned to hike up their low-rise jeans and keep their undergarments under wraps, or they'll be paying a $50 fine for indecent exposure.
The state is cracking down on indecency within state lines with a bill aimed at residents wearing low-riding pants that expose their underwear.
On Tuesday, the House of Delegates approved a bill that would fine anyone who "intentionally makes an obscene display" of his or her "below-waist undergarments intended to cover a person's intimate parts, in a lewd or indecent matter."
A Delegate from Chesapeake, Lionell Spruill Sr., has been one of the most outspoken opponents of the bill, saying, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch, that "these young folks are expressing themselves at a particular time. Don't fine these young folks."
"You had your time," he said, referring to the bell-bottom and polyester-suit days of his fellow delegates. "Let them have their time."
The bill's sponsor, Delegate Algie T. Howell, who has also filed bills against drivers who lean too far back in their seats and whose car stereos are too loud, disagreed with Spruill at a meeting of the House on Monday.
"When a person gets to the point that he or she does not want to sit out on his porch and watch people walk by because of the way that they are dressed," he said, "then I think it is time for us to do something about that."
The bill, which was introduced in January and approved 60-34 on Tuesday, would amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section relating to what its author calls "indecent display of below-waist undergarments."
The bill now goes to the state Senate.
