When people talk about the top 5 or even the top 10 lyricists in the game, why is Twista overlooked? Is it a lack of album promotion or sales that really overshadows his talent? Or could it be that his albums are poorly constructed? Adrenaline Rush 2007 isn't a suitable name for Twista's newest album, but it still showcases Twista as one of hip-hop's most elite spitters.
"Charged" kicks off the album with a detrimental beat and some serious staccatos. This is a bounce that only Twista could rock. The chopped and screwed hook doesn't really mesh too well with the Chi-Town native's flow, but you have to respect the performance. "Love Rehab," featuring R. Kelly, shows Twista's versatility and makes for a decent collaboration. "I Ain't That N----" demonstrates classic West Coast synths and is accentuated by Twist's insane flow. The first single, "Give It Up," featuring Skateboard P, is definitely a club joint for the masses and is the album's highlight. "Ain't No Hoes" is Twista at his best. It sounds more like the Midwest music we are used to from Twist, and adding Bone Thugs to this gem just makes it more official. "Whip Game Proper" is also worth mentioning.
Unfortunately, with the good comes the bad. The "Intro" and skits on Adrenaline Rush are beyond boring. The acting on some skits is like audio from a bad Master P movie. Speaking of bad audio, "Say Say" has a hook that even Hurricane Chris wouldn't recite. "No Pistols," featuring Speedknot Mobstaz, is skip worthy. The beat's horrible flamenco guitar plucks sounds like Telemundo meets "Zorro's" soundtrack.
This is another anchor that sinks Twista's ship. It seems like Twist is not setting trends but, instead, following them. This does not work to his advantage. There are way too many chopped and screwed hooks on the album, which shows a lack of strategy in completing Adrenaline Rush 2007.
The production, hooks and song structure weigh this project down so much that this may have been better as an accapella album. Twist needs Kanye West immediately; there are no songs that surpass previous joints like "Slow Jams" or "Overnight Celebrity." That classic Midwest swag is lost this time around, hopefully on Twista's next album this disappointment will make him come back stronger than ever.
