Swansea striker Lee Trundle may face police action after aiming insults at Welsh rivals Cardiff while celebrating his club's Football League Trophy victory.

The Swans defeated Carlisle 2-1 in the Millennium Stadium, in Cardiff, yesterday, with Trundle striking a spectacular opening goal - but after the final whistle, he celebrated by waving a Welsh flag bearing the words 'Fuck off, Cardiff', and donned a T-shirt on which a cartoon showed a man relieving himself on a Cardiff number nine shirt.

The 29-year-old, who joined Swansea from Wrexham in 2004, is not Welsh - he was born in Liverpool. He risks punishment by his club, and the Football Association of Wales may also take action. South Wales Police are also looking into Trundle's behaviour, with Chief Superintendent Bob Evans declaring: "I am aware of the incidents and I certainly take a very dim view of what happened. The incident with the flag was logged in our match report. It has also been reported to the Football League. An official police investigation has been launched, and further enquiries will be made into both incidents throughout the next few days."

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins apologised to Cardiff for Trundle's action, which he stressed were unjustified. Jenkins said in The Times: "This could be something that Lee lives to regret. It's certainly something I can't defend. Maybe it was a heat-of-the-moment thing. We regret any offence that could have occurred through this. Lee will probably wish that this hadn't happened. I just hope that it doesn't cause any animosity between the two sets of fans. I'll be taking this seriously - we'll have to deal with it."
