Non-Urban Music Top 25 Albums OF ALL TIME

#1
I figured I'd make this list in this forum, I included rap, rock, & r&b in my list, just a list I decided to try to make at 3:00 in the morning. I discounted a lot of my favorite groups/bands/rappers who I love, but never thought made a GREAT album, like Queen, Green Day, E-40, Gap Band, etc. Here's my list (in no order, I couldn't even begin to think which ones were better than others):

2Pac-Me Against the World ('Pac at his most introspective)

Anita Baker-Rapture (Smoothest female R&B album ever made)

Blackstreet-Another Level (New Jack that was actually good)

Bone Thugs N' Harmony-E. 1999 Eternal (Eerie atmosphere)

Brotha Lynch Hung-Season of da Siccness (Still disturbing)

D'Angelo-Voodoo (Best R&B record of the last decade)

DJ Quik-Safe & Sound (Quik at his P-funkiest)

DJ Quik-Rhythm-al-ism (Probably the best Quik record, musically)

Guns N' Roses-Appetite For Destruction (Best debut album EVER)

Jane's Addiction-Ritual de lo Habitual (Epic feel, rare nowadays)

Marvin Gaye-I Want You (Marvin's forgotten masterpiece)

Murder Was the Case (soundtrack) (Possibly Death Row at it's peak)

The Presidents of the United States of America-s/t (Seattle faves)

Prince & the Revolution-Purple Rain (Prince's most cohesive record)

Rick James-Street Songs (Remember him for music, not Chappelle)

Roger-The Many Facets of... (So Ruff, So Tuff is his best work)

Sly & the Family Stone-Stand! (Still underrated, even today)

Stevie Wonder-Talking Book (Stevie's first major breakthrough)

Sublime-s/t (Brad's swan song still rocks HARD)

Tech N9ne-Anghellic (Best concept record of the last 20 years)

Tony Toni Tone-House of Music (Great classic feel)

A Tribe Called Quest-The Low End Theory (Flows together perfectly)

Van Morrison-Moondance (Memories of my childhood...)

Warren G-Regulate...G Funk Era (Better than Snoop & Dre's 1st, IMO)

Westside Connection-Bow Down (What a West record should be)

Purple Rain is the obvious Prince record to choose, because it sold the most. It's the equivalent of saying that Thriller is the best MJ album.

I wouldn't say it's his most cohesive, or his best album in terms of production or songwriting.. that title goes to "Sign O The Times" without a doubt, and you'll always find SOTT above Purple Rain in critics lists...

I chose it because Every song is good :D

I chose the records I chose because they have little or no filler, IMO. That's why Emancipation or Sign O' the Times would never make my list, even though Sign... has my all-time favorite Prince song on it ("I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man"). There is no such thing as a perfect double disc record, Songs in the Key of Life, All Eyez on Me, The Art of War, even The White Album have enough filler that I believe they all would be near perfect trimmed down to one disc.

When it comes down to it, Purple Rain might be the greatest soundtrack ever made, definitely the leanest, meanest Prince record out there. Parade is a distant second (as far as Prince goes), but that never would have made my list.

Critic's lists? We're as much critics as the "writers" they put up in Rolling Stone or Spin. I remember the 500 Greatest Records list RS put out years ago, and I remember thinking, "Man, if it takes this little insight and this bad of musical taste to be a paid music critic..." I'd remake the same list for free just to show them how weak their musical tastes are. Al Green's "Greatest Hits", #52? Is it even allowed to put a Greatest Hits record on a top list? Fleetwood Mac, are you kidding me? Critics should be burned alive.

Prince was on top of every angle with "Purple Rain", every song is classic especially my shit "The Beautiful Ones", I fuckin' love Prince & the Revolution and he's still the fuckin' dopest, saw him August '04 in Houston damn what a fuckin' show I was 19 my first concert ever, and I will cherish that shit till' my dying day...my first concert of all time was fuckin' Prince Nelson Rogers, damn I'm truly grateful!

Every song on Sign O The Times is great too. Don't get me wrong, Purple Rain is fuckin dope, I just think Sign O The Times displays more versatility, originality and mature songwriting.

and KanDeeMan, Sign O The Times is only a double disc from a TECHNICAL point of view, as Prince wanted it that way.... There's only 16 songs on it. Not too many for there to be filler songs, IMO.

and I would never dream of putting Parade above SOTT. Parade has blatant filler material "Christopher Tracy's Parade, Do U Lie, Venus De Milo, Life Can Be So Nice"....

People still seem to forget that this is a NON HIP-HOP, RAP forum.

I don't understand after all these years how people ignore fact that this forum is open for discussion on OTHER genres of music.

#14
So what, would I post this on the Street Hop forum? Do Sly & Prince discussions belong there? There's no in-between so, GUESS WHAT? Deal with it, I know the rules, but I happen to think it defeats the purpose to have a "Top albums of all time" list, then a "Top rap albums of all time" list...unless you don't think rap is a legitimate form of musical expression.

We've been talking about Prince & Sly Stone for just about every post, so...what's the problem again?

Stand! is better.
