ALTAMONT, Kan. - A local teenager who was killed while having her picture taken with a Siberian tiger was remembered by classmates and teachers for her energy and "zeal for life," while two animal welfare groups demanded investigations into the attack.

Haley Hilderbrand, 17, was visiting the Lost Creek Animal Sanctuary on Thursday in Mound Valley, where, for years, area high school seniors have gone to have their class photos taken alongside the sanctuary's exotic fauna.

While the 7-year-old tiger was being restrained by the sanctuary's owner, Doug Billingsly, it turned and severely bit Hilderbrand, who later died of her wounds.

The tiger was killed and has been sent to Kansas State University for a necropsy.

Authorities said this was the first incident involving the sanctuary's animals since it opened in 1994 as a home to almost two dozen wild animals, including bears, lions, leopards and several species of tiger.

‘A threat to public safety’
Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer of the Humane Society of the United States, said state and federal officials should investigate.

"People are naturally fascinated by these wild and dangerous creatures, but that doesn't mean they should have direct access to these powerful and unpredictable animals," Pacelle said. "A spate of recent attacks demonstrates that these animals pose a threat to public safety and should only be handled by highly trained professionals in controlled environments at accredited zoos."

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals went a step further, demanding that the U.S. Department of Agriculture yank Billingsly's exhibitor license to operate the sanctuary.

"Keeping animals in totally unnatural, cramped, substandard conditions isn't just inhumane, it's downright dangerous," said director Debbie Leahy.

USDA spokesman Darby Holladay said regulations require that exhibitors of big cats keep adequate distance or barriers between the animals and the viewing public and said an investigation is ongoing.

Billingsly declined to comment to the Parsons Sun and hasn't returned phone calls and e-mails from The Associated Press for comment.

Visitors warned about animals
Billingsly's neighbors said they haven't had problems with the animals and said Billingsly ran a good operation and always warned visitors about the animals' unpredictability.

Dean Fouts said his two daughters both had their senior pictures taken with the big cats.

"(Billingsly) has put a lot of time and work into it and I'd hate to see him lose his business," Fouts said.

The photographer, Gail Weldon, declined to comment Friday. She did tell the Parsons Sun that she has taken photos with the tigers before and never had any problems.

Hilderbrand's family has avoided talking to the media.

At Labette County High School, where student pictures including the tigers line the walls of the guidance office, crisis teams were set up to help students cope on the first day of school, which is Monday.

English teacher Catherine Dean, who had Hilderbrand in some of her classes and even used her as a baby sitter, said Hilderbrand often went to the sanctuary. She described the girl as a "good student" and "a real joy to have in class."

"She kind of had this zeal for life, and she wanted to live it to the fullest," Dean said. "Anytime someone this young dies, it's horrible. I feel numb."

Goddamn motherfuckers. Why did they have to kill the tiger? What the fuck do they expect? Its a goddamn wild animal and a big predator, not a pet. Christ, when do people get that through their thick skulls?

I thought it was always standard practice to destroy the animal if it kills a human being? Yeah sad to see animals that are rare like tigers getting killed.

It is.

I think the girl was stupid for doing it. Hm.. why don't I stand next to a dangerous predator while we annoy the hell out of it by flashing a bright light into its eyes. Sounds like a plan.

Yes it is and i think it's lunacy. Why kill the animal? Out of spite? To prevent it killing again? Then kill every predator because they could all kill a human. I don't get it, what's the reasoning behind killing the animal? It's not like the tiger has conscience to understand the consequences of his actions.

i agree with duke, why kill the tiger? thats a bunch of bullshit. tigers are not pets, they are wild and dangerous animals. A human to them is no different than any other animal out there. If it moves, the tiger will kill it.

How is it her fault? THATS WHAT THE PLACE IS FOR! Read the article, that’s what the park is for, to come and get your photo taken next to its animals, as her class mates have been doing for the past SEVEN YEARS. So it’s not her fault, it’s the parks and trainers fault.

Saying its her fault is like saying its someone’s fault if they die in a car accident because they shouldn’t have been in a car in the first place, because its dangerous.

The animals were trained and getting photos taken with them is common practice.

And I’m glad the animal was killed. I guarantee you that had it been another human that viciously killed the girl most of you would think revenge was cool. Why is it cool to kill humans but not animals?

Wsup y'all

Tha girl wasn't stupid for takin a picture next to tha tiger. Rukas is right, tha place is just for that, takin a picture next to tha tiger. But I don't think it's right tho, tha ppl that own tha place r to blame, not tha girl.

But I mos definately disagree wit Rukas on tha killin tha tiger. That's just ridiculous to compare a tiger wit a human. Like above said, it's not like tha tiger knows its consequences.

So, neither tha girl or tha tiger is wrong. Above authority is. It's ridiculous to blame either of tha other 2 tho. Becuz, yes, tigers do hav their instinct and u can't blame em for bein cooped up n how he reacted. Killin tha tiger was mos definately wrong, n this "standard practice" is absurd. Especially since not every human gets killed when they kill, even tho they hav a conscience, but tha tiger lacks one so he must b killed for wat he lacks at birth. N tha girl isn't wrong, becuz it's a paid organization, she expects to b safe.

Peace
Skillz

you dont think the tiger that fucked up dude in vegas was tired from fukking acting like it wasnt a wild animal lol

Its her fault because she took a picture next to a fucking tiger. Who cares if thats what the park is for? Taking a picture next to a tiger is stupid. Its not the same as saying its someones fault for crashing when driving a car, its the same as saying its someones fault for speeding and then crashing. The tiger isnt getting paid and it didnt take the job by choice, its being forced to take pictures out of its natural enviroment.

Keep laughing. The animal WASNT wild. The animal was TRAINED. Its not like she went to Africa stood next to a tiger and got eaten. That would be stupid. But she didnt do that, she went to a national park who's business it is to have people pose next to their animals. This is what they are TRAINED to do. The tiger WAS NOT wild.

thats like a person of any color/race walking thru another races neighborhood with a derogatory sign hangin on them... you better expect the worse
Worst analogy EVER. The animal was trained. That was its purpose, she did what she was SUPPOSED to do and what she probably PAID to do.

And at that.. theres not many tigers left in the wild... now im not blaming her .. but comeon.. have some fucking sence... IT'S A VISCIOUS ANIMAL!!
No, its NOT. Its a TRAINED animal. Dogs can be viscious and deadly too, should people not take photos with them?

what the fuck did they expect, for the tiger to hug her?? of course the fucking tiger was going to do something. its called a predator for a reason. its reasons like this that i say fuck the government. thats like leaving a child with a child molestor when you know about his history. and she shouldve known theres a risk when you sit next to something wild like that. even if theres trainers there, theres always going to be that chance that the motherfucker will bite you. i couldnt give less of a fuck is someone trained a tiger, i wouldnt stand next to it. because i know the consequences of what would happen if it snapped on me.
