Thoughts on the 2007 Shelby GT500

one thing i hate about this car.. other than the iron block.. is that the aero dynamics.. who does ford have working on there designs, cave men?
That's the problem with retro designs, and it applies mostly to American car companies. First, they start out with a classic car as their source of inspiration (which isn't a bad thing, I'm a fan of a lot of the old musclecars). However, at the time there wasn't too much substantiated knowledge or research on automotive aerodynamics, hence the terrible drag coefficients and lack of downforce that many of these cars suffer from. Second, the modern car designers make concept cars that do incorporate many of the styling cues, many of which are unfortunately not very aerodynamic. (If you look at the concept car for the current Mustang, the front of the hood sticks out a lot farther, which can't be good for aerodynamics.) Third, the concept cars are dulled down and made more practical for mass production, which is why the Mustang looked a lot less striking than its concept car--a car based on an outdated, aerodynamically inefficient shape--all for the sake of "retro styling."

Personally I think the retro designs have been way overdone at this point, and it's starting to show that American car designers are running out of fresh ideas so they resort to ripping off old designs.

The aerodynamics for this car is bad. But with the new retro looking Camaro coming out it seems they put some thought into that. Still, this whole retro thing is just blah in my opinion.

for one the gt500 is underrated. dont believe that 450-475 shit. it puts out around 500hp TO THE WHEELS. i seen on a forum that a guy changed the pullies, intake, exhaust and tuned it. the thing put out 638hp to the wheels. the iron block is also a plus. it makes it stronger. the 2001 cobra had an aluminum block and couldnt handle over 500rwhp. the 2003 cobra had an iron block and can handle 1000rwhp with no problem. about handling, this one is built to also handle. and i think you might have a choice about what type of rear end you want. im not too sure so dont quote me on that

Um... according to whom? And is there proof? We're talking about a car that hasn't even hit the streets yet, chances are that's all speculation.

No it wasn't. It was built to handle better than a regular Mustang, but not better than any other sports car it will compete with. It still has a live rear axle, and I don't care who touches it, whether it's SVT or Carrol Shelby, the car is not going to put out handling numbers that will make other car manufacturers start worrying. Be realistic. The rear axle was done to lower costs for the Mustang, and they kept it to lower costs for the GT500 so they wouldn't have to develop a whole new suspension for a limited production car.

This was being considered by Ford, but as I mentioned above, they didn't want to spend more money developing a new suspension for it, so they just modified the existing parts. How typical.

lets wait till they are on the road... and iron blocks do make it stronger= more horsepower but at the same time. it adds amount of weigh thats hard to get rid of

but i would still love to see what this thing will do on the streets

can i just say that the GTO would whip the shit outta this mustang??? or would that be incorrect?
INCORRECT. Even though both cars are V-8 powered and rear-wheel drive, they are in two completely different price ranges. The GTO is better matched with the regular Mustang GT. The GT500 would mop the floor with the GTO in terms of acceleration.

youre forgetting theres mules on the street. check on the svt forums. there have been some dyno tested. theres mules, there was a z06 vette at the track even before it came out.

even than theyre still giving fans what they want. a fast car that can be had for cheap. they had a survey before IIRC, about which rear end they wanted

you would be incorrect. like deeznutz said, its more comparable to the gt. its hp/lb ratio is not good enough

lol. i like the gto. but it was lacking spirit. i seen it as a rebadged holden :(.

the new gt500 is putting out good numbers. one of them dynoed bone stock around 440rwhp. with just a tune, it made over 480rwhp. with a pulley swap and boltons (stock blower and motor) it made over 560rwhp

i know its a holden, but im saying they shouldve redesigned it a bit to be something more than that.

the dodge challenger looks gorgeous. i just hope they come out with a newer 426 hemi for it or something because 425hp is not enough for it to stick with the mustang and camaro. considering itll probably weigh around 4200lbs.

yes....yes i have........

and that challenger is just sick....i hope they dont change anything from the concept

i think it has a good chance of coming out like that. its the camaro im worried about :(

I remember reading somewhere that it'll prolly get supercharged.
