Never heard of either of them being mentioned in conjuction with the movie.

The serial killer who the movie is loosely based on is Eddie Gein.

This is most obvious in the cannibalistic nature of the movie & the pratical use of human body parts - both of whch were inspired by Gein.

Tobe Hooper has said this himself.
