Non-Urban Music The Smiths/ Morrissey

#1
The Smiths, the greatest rock band of the '80s who released almost 20 singles and 7 albums; and their lead singer Morrissey, who's career as a solo artist has lasted longer than 2 lifetimes of The Smiths, but whose impact on the music industry declined after 1987. Have had an enormous impact on me but yet is something I see very rarely in other people.

Morrissey (aka Mozz/Mozza) is the only artist from another genre whose lyrics subject come close to those touched on by Tupac. Morrissey's lyrics often delve into the depths of misery, detachment, and loneliness. Declaring 'please don't to take me home' because he hasn't got one to go to. His Wit is as sharp as a razor and he has culminated the embodiment of his own fanatical cult, in way of those that follow him.

Apart from being rumored to be Gay and having a deep affinity for the works of Oscar Wilde, Morrissey stands alone, and is a pioneer in his own right. His career surviving repeated aversion from the media, a media that has attack the brashness side of his lyrics, which deal with issues as real as they are somewhat taboo.

The music he produced is far from a sterotypical view of a young Mozz, who lived most of his early years as a loner, chosing to spend most of his time reading books rather than running the streets. His Gemini nature shows through, proving that he can easily tip both ends of the scale. Sending flowers to the funeral of Reggie Kray and singing about him on his solo album Suedehead.

While The Smiths/Morrissey's music appeals somewhat to the faint-hearted, outcast and depressed civilisation; this is contradicted by a unique and fascinating sense of defined love, peace, unity and inner strength - especially in the song 'How Soon Is Now'.

I may be reaching to a lot of people younger than me, I hear people saying 'Who are The Smiths?' already. In fact I never took much notice of them until I was introduced, just like everybody does with music they have never heard of before. And for those who already listen - where are you? I aint never heard anyone mention them on here before.

Some girl upstate hipped me to the Smiths about a year ago. Dope, indeed. Jeff Buckley, one of my favorite musicians, said of the Smiths, "They were the only good thing about 80s music." I don't agree, but they were certainly one of the good things.

Morrissey did an interview with Jonathan Ross on his 'Friday Night with...' programme in the UK. It aired on May 14th last year and he sung 2 songs - I would have said performs but 'only Seals perform' according to Morrissey.

They touched upon some issues that have followed Morrissey such as Vegetairianism:
Ross - "would you eat your cat if you were in a plane crash?'
Mozz - "what would I be doing taking a cat on a plane?"

Solitude:
Ross - "will you be my friend?"
Mozz - "No."

Age:
Ross- "You must be about 45 now... ?"
Mozz- "No actually I'm about 70"

Then there was this video of Harry Hill doing Morrisey in Stars in Their Eyes, singing none other than the one classic song mentioned here, it's easy to tell by the gladiolli in the picture anyway:

It was a good interview and raised laughs from the audience on a number of occasions. Mozza was far from a twat. Ross even asked Morrissey about his Autobiography that he is writing, to which Morrissey replied that he still has a couple of chapters to finish, which meant that there are some chapters that he hedn't written yet (Ross asked what this meant).

There's a good article on it here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3720751.stm

How Soon is Now. It's the theme tune for the Charmed TV programme. Also one Tatu covered on their album 200km/h in the Wrong Lane.

'I am the Son and Heir of nothing inparticular.'

Great Tune!

Agree 100%.. cept for the fact that he's a twat... it shouldn't matter if he's gay, bi, or whatever.

Morrissey said it the best, " Bi-sexual, homosexual.. it all means nothing. "Bi" and "homo" are simply prefixes.. cause everyone is sexual in their own way. "

Not the exact quote, but along those lines.

I love the Smiths and Morrissey. Such a unique sound in a decade where music wasn't really at it's greatest.

I like about 5 of the Smiths' songs. His themes are good but his lyrics always go off into weirdness... And he doesn't pace his words to the melody, he just seems to blurt them out like reading from a page. The songs would have been better if he had tightened them up.

That's what makes Morrissey different from other singers. He has his own unique style and doesn't tend to stick to the normal 4/4 time signature in his lyrics. He's just being creative...being the same as everyone else won't set you apart from other performers

I never said he was a twat cuz he is a suspected homo
The reason i said that is cuz he done an interview in the uk an he never came across well IMO, he was awkward, moody, mean, and to be honest boring! he's still the man though, i disagree when you say music in the eighties was'nt great.

Yeah.. I never said the 80's sucked stefan.. just making a point that the 80's wasn't as good as the 60's and 70's.. however, that's my own personal opinion.

I agree.

The lyrics are Homo-erotic, akin to a lot of Madonna's songs. When he is saying "Punctured bicycle on a hill-top desolate" He is reffering to the protagonists deflated bisexuality, which at this time is leaning more to homo-sexuality- the side of him that isn't deflated. "will nature make a man of me yet?"/ "This Charming Man" are statements from a gay point of view. "Why pamper life's complexities when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat" - he is hinting at a sexual fantasy of 'doing it' in a car. A paradox of Morrissey's, he is strictly vegetarian yet finds leather seats highly erotic  A marvelous contradiction!

Oscar Wilde said "people contradict each other, but the wise contradict themselves". Mozz is an Oscar Wilde Nut.
