Weissman demonstrated the ability to fully cure type I diabetes in mice using stem cells. But he ran into a road block when pharmaceutical companies refused to sponsor clinical trials. Weissman implied that the pharmaceutical companies had put profit over principle, preferring to keep diabetes sufferers dependent on costly insulin than to cure them.

Conspiracy, fake or just more researching involved before introduced to the public?

People that believe in conspiracy tend to use this quote,

"The Money Is In The Treatment, Not The Cure."

If he really invented it and it has a chance to work I'm sure many companies would fight for him. Also, I'm sure he would get a Nobel Prize.

Mice trials are a long ways before an actual cure. Many have cured various things in mice trials before moving further and eventually failing.

Do i think the pharmaceuticals are greedy bastards? Hell yea.

But maybe there will be a change once the US introduces universal health care and they are forced to charge what the government asks for instead of the other way around.

Good point you raise. In general I think it's correct, the statement that is. The money IS in the treatment, not the cure. I don't believe in the conspiracy hype however because I don't think the big pharmaceutical companies *can* create a cure for disease X AND keep a lid on it. There'll always be someone ringing the bell about it.

I do think a lot of medicin producing corporations do pretty much everything they can get away with to increase their profits. Maybe a handful of companies are actually ran with research first in mind, and profit second.


In general I think the real crooks are the (well, prolly the same ) companies that create all the uppers, downers, all the mood altering prescription bullshit that is consumed in such great numbers in the Western world. Now there's a type of medicin nobody really needs, yet it's being marketed as necessary by "the system" and incredible revenues are made because of it.
