Technology The 'Everything Google that isn't Android' thread

Hashtags in google search lead towards G+ :) Smooth. All YouTube comments about to be powered by G+ as well. Called that one ages ago.

I noticed that YouTube channels are now on G+. When you say YouTube comments will be powered by G+, are you saying that comments will appear on the YouTube website if someone comments from G+ and vice versa?

No. The whole comments engine on YouTube will work via your G+ profile/identity, "Likes" are becoming +1's, etc.

I was worried about all Google services being "powered" by G+ as I don't really like G+ and didn't really want to use it. I wasn't happy when Google Play took "advantage" of G+. It feels a little like forcing people into it.

Say goodbye to hilarious YouTube comments, now that our real names have to be used. I guess people would still use fake accounts for that, but...

I'm thinking about getting a Chromebook. That new touchscreen Acer one, the C720p is only £250.

I don't need it, I just want it to satisfy my new tech craving. lol

Let me know What do circuit boards exactly do? Do they just transfer electricity from component to component? Or are they able to transfer information between each other and if so how how does it transfer it?

Google are going to release a free music service in radio style format. At least they'll be paying artists and rights-holders more money than what Apple will pay.

Why does Google Hangouts suck so much cock for Android? From what I've read, iOS gets the better app with more features and better stability.

I actually use Hangouts strictly for messaging, aside from a handful of people that I text. But it's still home to a group chat and 7 other people I contact at least once a week. And it blows.

Is Whatsapp not exactly what a Messaging app is? What sets it apart from Hangouts?

And I'm not in the minority, there are threads on forums everywhere full of users lamenting Android's version of Hangouts.

Open a poll. :)

Whatsapp uses your data. Messaging doesn't. I don't know the exact differences (and I'm not asking for them ;), as I can google too). But I was talking conventional messaging vs whatsapp.

Benefits (for me).

Autobackup
Group function
Can send pics and video for free (my package gives me unlimited texts, but charges me for MMS)

Hangouts and WhatsApp are both data-based IM apps. Hangouts uses your Google account, WhatsApp uses your phone number.

I actually think Telegram is probably better than both, but nobody uses it. I mostly use Hangouts, and then WhatsApp. I know more people that use WhatsApp, but the people I talk to the most primarily use Hangouts.

I don't use SMS, but I thought google merged their messaging app into hangouts.

If it's data based, that means others need to have hangouts too to receive messages, like whatsapp? Not gonna work for me, everyone else has iphones and already have whatsapp installed.

I have viber. But use google talk now. Less lag when talking.

Hangouts is an IM service first. You have the option of integrating SMS as well. I use the messaging app for the few people I SMS and Hangouts for the rest, including group chats. I can respond to Hangout messages on my computer or tablet, so I don't need to be near my phone. Sharing links is also a lot easier on a desktop so that works for me as well.

Last I used Whatsapp was about three years ago and there was no desktop client. I don't know if there's one now, but it really wouldn't matter. Africa, Canada or the US, all my friends use Hangouts. They also use Whatsapp on the side, but none have ever told me to switch which means Hangouts works for them as well. The alternative to Hangouts is Facebook chat, since that too has a mobile and desktop client as well. But I don't use Facebook anymore.
