The End of a Very, Very Great Era. And how fucked am I?

...

This used to be the (the) greatest torrent site for music, and music making application downloads. as well as e-learning videos and books/comics.

Now it says the site is closed because of possible copyright infringement, and that the users will be further investigated.

My question in detail is, what are the chances that I get a lawsuit mailed to me? And if you don't see the picture i'm painting with that formulation, don't be a smarty pants. Die instead :)

Oh, and also, look at this thread as an homage to one of the best sources for free music, many albums in several qualities (192, 256, VBR V2, VBR V0, FLAC) as well as single rips. Everything on that site got transcode checked, meaning re-encodes were removed and more than half of the shit was ripped by the users themselves. Including MP3 rip logs and what have you. Basically, you normally wouldn't have to delete an album because it was poorly encoded or because there were skips, and you didn't have to worry about downloading an album where the file labeling and ID3 tags were inconsistent.

I like to sort my music. It was a great site.

The users will be investigated thing is an idle threat, and the only people that can prosecute you is your national authorities, and even then, if the copyright is not registered in your country (which it is most likely not) your authorities wouldn't give two shit, they are there to enforce their own laws not the USA's.

Actually, I do think American copyright law applies here. Or, well, I do see it as a possibility that my own authorities would persecute my poor ass on behalf of the states.

And actually there were a couple of Norwegian albums downloaded in my time there.

I'm not really worried though, just wondering I guess. The bitch of it all is that oink's gone now.

Laws only apply in the country where they are issued. They tried to shut down The Pirate Bay but failed because not only are their servers outside of the US. Also it would take way too long to find the information for every single person that has used that site, they would spend more money tracing all those people than the money lost from copyright infringement.

^^
That last part is a good point, but Sweden is special in that they have no copyright laws. We do, though. And I do think there is a form of co-operation there.

I mean when I go to the movies, I see shit commercials encouraging you not to illegally download movies. So if American movies are copyrighted over here I would guess American music is too. I don't know though and like I said, I'm not really worried.

I just wanted to bitch about Oink shutting down really. God I loved that site.

OiNK was a great site. I got banned from there around 3 months ago though, my ratio went over by ONE FUCKING MEGABYTE and I was away on holiday for 2 weeks so I couldn't even upload anything. But damn, that sucks they got shut down.
