PORSCHE 911 TOPS CAR LIST

Motoring experts have named the Porsche 911 as the greatest-ever high-performance car.

Auto Express magazine picked the Porsche from more than 60 fast cars over a period of more than 50 years.

"The Porsche 911 is a classic in every sense of the word," said Auto Express editor- in-chief David Johns.

The experts chose the best performance car from each of the last six decades and then picked a winner.

The finalists were:

1950-59: Lotus Seven
1960-69: Jaguar E-Type
1970-79: Lotus Esprit
1980-89: Ford Sierra Cosworth
1990-99: McLaren F1
2000-05: Porsche 911

Mr Johns said: "These are all winners, but only one of them has got what it takes to be crowned overall champion. The Porsche 911 has the best bits of all the others and none of the flaws.

"The latest version is the most mature performance vehicle money can buy. It's the result of continuous, fastidious development since the first model's launch in 1963."

Porsche 911 is a monster but mclaren F1 runs shit being powered by a BMW 6.1 Liter V12 engine producing 627 hp with a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 230-240 mph.

It also costs about as much as your entire neighbourhood.

I don't agree because i don't believe in a greatest sports car ever :) There would be so many. I can see where they come from, though. The 911 has consistency. It evolved through the years much like gelatine pudding.

Why the hell is a Sierra Cossy in there though? Hardly the most exciting car ever =/

I would have to say that magazine editor is very wrong also never heard of this article before as there are tons of better and PROVEN ones in the market. First if u talk about true sports car performance for the dollar and the one that kill the mighty enzo is the koenigsegg CCR 0-60 2.9 secs flat while doing quarter in 9 flat and to meet a top speed of 248 and beats the enzo any day in the track and costs around 300k euro, also the new corvette(base) kicks the porsche 911's ass around the track and on the street, while the new corvette z06 killed it even on nurburgring times and street. The record for the fastest time in the infamous RING for a production car is held by porsche carrera gt, then the z06 corvette(500 hp) which has lower maintanence plus gives 15/19 mpg.
Do not degrade american cars any longer, we are catching up and catching up real fast. sure our interior has a bit of plastic but when in the hell u would notice plastic when u hittin 3 digit speeds.

Remember, they said the best EVER, so the Porsche 911 is a good candidate. They weren't saying it's the fastest or the most badass car. The 911 has always been a good car all around, considering price, performance (in terms of acceleration, braking, cornering, etc.), practicality (hey, it's got seating for four usually). Plus it's held its own for decades and still survives to this day. Yes, the McLaren F1 will be the ultimate supercar for a while, but let's not forget that it died out and could not turn a profit, hence BMW and McLaren both losing money and cutting overall production from 300 down to 100.

American cars are getting better, but they are still sub-par compared to their overseas competitors, and it is even more evident in their non-sports cars. Consumers are finally beginning to realize this, which is why American car makers are having that employee pricing thing, because they're not selling well anymore because their products aren't reliable, and in most cases were made almost strictly for straight-line speed. Yes, triple-digit speeds are nice, but plastic interiors are easy to notice since you're in it all the time, whereas triple-digit speeds are once in a while on an open road.
Some companies are just too proud to be American, like Ford and GM. That's why for the past 15 years or so, they've been all about making inexpensive cars (usually good) that cost the least possible amount to develop and mass produce (usually bad) for their own country. I hate how Ford talks about the solid rear axle on the Mustang as being American or classic or essential for drag racing, it was done because they're too cheap to put an independent rear suspension because they didn't want the base Mustang V-6 to be over $20,000, so they made all the Mustangs that way. I also hate how Chevy talks about their pushrod V-8s as being the only way to go when making an American sports car, it's just because they've been using pushrods forever, and they don't want to spend money on research and development for a more modern design, like a DOHC V-8 that would be more efficient in terms of hp/liter and fuel efficiency. But unfortunately, the average American consumer doesn't care and wants to get the most bang for his buck without thinking of things in the long-term. But Dodge/Chrysler seems to be doing fine, especially since they're working with both Europe and Asia. Plus their products share components with more reliable companies like Mercedes-Benz, who provides certain suspension components and 5-speed transmissions from their E-Class, which ends up on the Chrysler 300 and probably the Dodge Magnum and Charger too.
And another thing that pisses me off about Ford is that we don't even get their best cars. Overseas, their Focus is actually pretty decent, plus they have versions of it in excess of 200hp (and there are rumors of an AWD 300+ hp version) plus they have a bunch of twin-turbo 350+ hp sedans in Europe, but they don't even give us the good stuff, not even on home turf, more than likely because America has such a hard on for ancient Mustangs.

HELLLOOO,
have u ever taken a 911 in for service, *knock on head*.
Money aint water and it would take a lot of money to service a 911 for 5-10k checkups and so on and on. I dont want a heart attack everytime i need to fix or take it in for service on these damn things.

also hey,
the corvette gives 19mpg and beat the GG tax in america and i never seen a 911 do that. OH plastic interior, ooooohhhh have u ever heard of a HUD. I never notice the interior my volume is all the way to the right, and my eyes glued on my windshield telling me what speeds i am going which are triple digits.

McLaren shits on the 9-11,

I have driven a few 9-11's and I don't enjoy them.

Correct, money isn't water for the majority of us, and if this applies to you, then you shouldn't have a 911 in the first place. They're still well above the cost of an average car in the U.S., and the maintenance fees are no different. But my uncle who bought a 911 C4S a couple years back doesn't seem to mind.

That's all true too, I never said the Corvette was a bad car, the only thing I said relating to the Vette was that the interior could be better (the C6 fixed a lot of things though) plus the pushrod V-8 is an aging engine. I was talking mostly about American cars in general in most of my post.

By the way, what kind of car(s) do you drive?

I'd have to agree.

What other model of car has evolved and still been constantly as good as a 911.

And how many of these other cars can you drive everyday? Mclaren F1??? Get back to your car mags and your fantasies.

The 911 is reasonably cheap, gives decent mpg and is a fair price for parts and servicing. It's not much more expensive than your typical BMW.

Plus it's a lot more exclusive.

As an all round sports car it wins.

All people saying maclaren F1, linear acceleration is not the be all and end all of a car.

THe BMW M3 e46 is the best sports car ever. :D

Even though the F1 is known for its outrageous topspeed, the thing flies through corners. It would gobble up just about everything on a track, save for cars in the Enzo department.

911 shits on all your cars.

I agree, and I'm not being biased cause Porsches are my fav cars... (ok I am being biased and there's nothing you can do about it)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *points at foolish TB members, except Amara cause she's a Porsche fan like me :) *
