SuprNova.org was once the zenith of BitTorrent listing sites. Although not a tracker, SuprNova indexed an enormous quantity of torrents from various other BitTorrent sites. At its height it was almost synonymous with BitTorrent, as its comprehensiveness made any other BitTorrent site almost irrelevant.
Then December 2004 rolled in - a dark time for the BitTorrent community. Dozens of eDonkey2000 and BitTorrent indexing sites were forced off line, bring about the end for sites such as ShareConnector and Youceff Torrents. In calculated preperation, SuprNova began releasing information that it was working on a decentralized alternative. The project was entitled "eXeem." The hype surrounding this project was nearly on par with the buzz that once surrounded WinMX 4.0.
Then on December 19, 2004, perhaps the worst news many BitTorrent fans could have discovered came true as SuprNova.org announced it was closing its doors.
"SuprNova.org was more like a hobby that took most of my free time away," said SuprNova administrator Sloncek. "And now with current situation, there’s too much pressure and I don’t have the time for it."
In just over 2 weeks, Sloncek would find himself immersed with the now controversial eXeem project. eXeem was thought to be the golden egg of the BitTorrent community, as it was understood to somehow decentralize indexing trackers and once again bring prosperity to this now troubled network.
Yet news of Cydoor being implanted into the client, along with the fact eXeem did nothing to decentralized BitTorrent, quickly earned it scorn and dispraise from the file-sharing community. Within months, eXeem was banished to the bowels of the Internet where to this day its fate remains unknown.
Although eXeem was a failure, Sloncek returned to his roots - BitTorrent. This time, Sloncek restored the SuprNova.org domain, however like promised torrents would no longer accompany this site. Instead, the site is dedicated to P2P and file-sharing news.
But our story doesn’t end there. Sloncek has resurrected and updated the old SuprNova.org code, and through an arrangement with a friend of his, established the code on a new site named NewNova.org. Sloncek contends that he does not own NewNova.org, which looks virtually identical to SuperNova.
Is this the resurrection of SuprNova - a new name but playing the same game? Although Sloncek is apparently not at the helm, he will still be playing a critical role in the upgrade and maintenance of the site and back end work. If people overcome the distrust that ensued during the eXeem debacle, then perhaps SuprNova, now in the form of NewNova, will once more rule the BitTorrent galaxy.
