Substitute teacher accused of assaulting student

MANCHESTER — A Derry man who was working as a substitute teacher at Hillside Middle School faces trial in Manchester District Court on a charge of assaulting an eighth grade student.

Daniel White, 28, of 31 Bedard Ave., Derry, is free on $1,000 personal recognizance bail pending his trial June 14 on the misdemeanor charge.

Hillside Principal Stephen Donohue said White was a substitute eighth-grade math teacher when the incident occurred March 30.

Assistant School Superintendent Frank Bass said White had undergone a standard criminal background check, including checking his fingerprints with the FBI, before being put on the substitute list.

According to the affidavit filed in support of the arrest, witnesses and the alleged victim, Kyle Lamos, claimed White hit Lamos on the head with a closed fist and grabbed him in a bear hug.

According to the affidavit, White said Lamos entered the class and said to him: “Hello, precious.” White, who told police he had been verbally abused by students all day, said he responded: “Hello, cave man,” and told the boy to remove his hat.

Donohue said students are not permitted to wear hats in class.

Accounts of what happened differ, according to the affidavit, with Lamos claiming he was greeting a friend in the class and that he didn’t hear White tell him to take off his hat.

Everyone agreed White went to where Lamos was sitting and removed the boy’s hat, but, again, student accounts differ as to whether White threw the hat on the floor or at the boy and whether he hit him with a closed fist or open hand.

A teacher in an adjoining room, Deb MuCullough, told police she heard students yelling there was a fight between a student and teacher and entered the room to see White leaning over the boy and hitting him twice with a closed fist.

According to the affidavit, McCullough told police she heard White say: “That will teach you to respect me” or “I will teach you to respect me,” and she separated the two.

According to the affidavit, Lamos suffered a scratch on the right side of his nose and on his right eye and had a red patch on his left shoulder area. Donohue said Lamos did not miss any school as a result of the incident.

Donohue said he had discussions about the incident with Lamos and his family.

I assume this is in Manchester, England? An incident similar to his happened at my school too, a eldery substitute teacher started throwing chairs at pupils and he even picked one up by the scruff of his neck and pinned him against the wall.
