subaru question

This thread is about reliable cars and you start mentioning VWs??

Subies can be pretty reliable, most last to atleast 100k. Some of the WRX transmissions had/have issues, but I suspect this to be from abuse.

PS. They are ugly :p

I plan on buying an 05/06 RSX-S in a year or two, about 23k new and you get 200 reliable hp.

Also with subies you may have some more repair costs and higher labor hours because they are turbo and awd.

(I am a technician)

VWs are not reliable. End of story. Talk to anyone that "knows" cars.

lol

Every VW person I have spoken to... I visit the forum for technical guides says they are.

So therefore what story is this the end off?

Subaru's seem to have a fair amount of problems. I was a member of a Subaru forum when I had 1. www.scoobynet.co.uk.

And why did you put " " around knows. Is that because you meant only those that agree wuth you, know cars.

And the word is mechanic not technician. Just because you can plug a D-type plug in the engine bay and read a computer screen does not make the job more skilled. Less infact as you now don't need to do much fault finding. The only reason they are now called technicians is to justify the $200 labour charge per hour.

Compared to what? I test drove a DSG-equipped GTI before. It's not a bad car, it's good-looking, quick and fun, but definitely not the car I'd pick with a $30k budget... maybe with $20k-$25k

agreed. its like an R32. them things go for more than they are worth. sure it looks good, has awd, and has a sexy exhaust note. but even at 25k, id rather pay money for an evo which is faster, better looking, handles better, and will be more reliable overall.

The difference is an EVO needs servicing every 6K, a Golf every 10K. Parts are cheaper for the Golf, and labour is cheaper, at least it is a huge difference in the UK.

Far more people can afford to run a Golf compared to an EVO. I would never buy a Jap "supercar" again. But then I would never buy a Golf GTi or R32.

If I was to buy a cheap practical well built car I'd pick an entry Golf, or a diesel Golf. Although it has to be everything electric and have aircon.

If I was to buy a decent car again I'd rather buy a 4 year old 911 than a brand new EVO.

the only R32 id kill for is a skyline. the golf r32 is a nice car, but its still not good enough for the price. id rather pay for a used supra, an evo, svt cobra mustang, or a legal R32 GTR.

The U.S. Evos don't... I don't think the UK Evos are that much different. And if that is true, I'd imagine it's mostly just to work on the AYC (Active Yaw Control) in the rear differential, which I hear needs frequent fluid changes. But if that counts as real servicing (beyond regular oil changes), then yes, you're right.

Maybe, but the Evo is FAR easier to make even faster with little money. Tiny things like boost control, ECU reflashes, and bolt-ons can go a long way and not cost an arm and a leg. A reputable Evo tuner on some of the message forums I post on is sponsored by several companies and assembled his own $1270 package that boosts a U.S. Evo IX (rated at 286 hp) to 330 whp, which translates to just shy of 400 hp at the crankshaft.

Would you mind elaborating? Obviously I'm biased, but I'd like to know your reasons.

I think Evo's are too impractical to drive everyday, at least in the UK. And not cool enough to keep as a weekend car.

I'd rather have a 911 which I believe has more class, and drive that everyday. Running costs and insurance are similar.

I don't dislike Japanese cars, I had a Scooby for 18 months. But they are essentially a 4 door family saloon with a turbocharger and uprated brakes and suspension.

While I agree that 911s are much more classy and have far more greater face value, running costs and insurance are definitely lower for the Evo. While both need higher octane fuel and synthetic oil, the services (whether done at a dealership or an auto shop) car-specific replacement parts are definitely more expensive for any Porsche.

Haha... basically. But they're a ton of fun to drive :) Plus it's even more fun to see the look of surprise on unsuspecting 911 and Corvette drivers

Oh yeah they are definately rapid. And they are great fun to drive can't deny that. I had some great fun in mine. And a load of fun in my mate's EVO 7.
