Just for a change!!

The Glastonbury Festival is up and running after storms and torrential rain delayed the beginning of festivities..Bands were due to take to start playing at 10.30am - but organisers pulled the plug because of health and safety fears.

Festival organiser Michael Eavis said: "Two inches of rain in just a few hours mean that the festival will be a muddy one from now on but the forecast is good from now on."

Thunderstorms and torrential rain pounded Glastonbury revellers from 5am..

Partygoers unzipped their tents to see grey sky, flashes of lightning - and lots and lots of mud.

Radio 1 had to stop broadcasting as the river they were pitched beside began to rise dangerously.

And there was a near disaster when lightning struck a beer tent!

But after six hours of rain and misery, the sun began to poke through and a cheers and a round of applause rippled across the campsites.

Yesterday it was all wall-to-wall sunshine and scorching temperatures.

Forecasters predict a weekend of sunshine and showers.

Avon and Somerset Police have spent nearly one year planning for the three-day event, which is expected to attract a total of 100,000 visitors to watch such bands as the White Stripes, the Doves and The Killers.

More than 600 officers will be on duty over the weekend a a cost of almost £1m.

Many new acts breaking into the industry will get the chance to show off their talents on the John Peel stage, named after the groundbreaking DJ who died this year.

It will also be the last time one of the main parts of Glastonbury will be on offer - magic mushrooms, with the Government due to make them illegal within the next three weeks.

Next year the festival, held in the fields of Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset takes a break as owner Michael Eavis gives the greenery a chance to recover.
