Jellyfish killed girl, 7, police believe
Monday Jan 9 10:22 AEDT

The deadly box jellyfish is to blame for the death of a seven-year-old girl in far north Queensland, police believe.

The girl was swimming at Umagico Beach near Bamaga, 40km from Cape York Peninsula's most northern point, when she was stung about midday on Sunday.

She rushed out of the water screaming and collapsed on the beach in front of her parents, who quickly called triple 0.

After a bystander's desperate attempts to resuscitate the girl failed, paramedics arrived and performed CPR but could not get a pulse.

The girl was taken to Bamaga hospital where she was pronounced dead at 1.20pm (AEST).

Tentacles marks, across the girl's chest and legs, indicated she had been stung by a box jellyfish, a police spokeswoman said.

"Indications are it's a box jellyfish - that's what it looks like from the tentacle marks but we can't confirm that until they have done tests," she said.

The death contributes to a horror spell in Queensland's waters, as the third ocean fatality in as many days.

Sarah Whiley, 21, died of shock and blood loss following a frenzied shark attack off North Stradbroke Island in the Moreton Bay on Saturday.

A 50-year-old was found on Sunday afternoon at Balaclava Island near Rockhampton after his boat capsized on Friday night.

The jellyfish fatality follows the death of seven-year-old Jarred Crook in 2003, who was killed when a jellyfish wrapped its poisonous tentacles around his legs and torso in shallow waters at Wongaling Beach, south of Cairns.

Crazy, also I was wondering why her parents wernt with her.. She was only 7! I wouldnt be swimming in QLD at the moment :woah:

RIP

Are box jellyfish the ones you are supposed to put vinegar on asap after being stung?

As for the other girl - "frenzied attack" by sharks, then dying of shock and blood loss... i can think of nothing worse. What a horrible way to die.

Yeah I know, what would your mind be thinkin?

But I think Box Jelly Fish are the ones that kill you within minutes, it'd be VERY hard to get the help you'd need in that sort of time. Especially because she was so young she wouldnt have been able to say what it was. They are very popular in QLD aswell.. Certain times of year you should just not swim there - So I'm told.

Funny because the most fatal shark attacks happen in Victoria and South Australia no pun intended and the most Jellyfish deaths occurs in N.T. & W.A., plus the jellyfish only swim up in the tropics it's rare that the current will carry them any more south than Bundy.

If anything stay in QLD's waters because they are warm :D :thumb:. On a similar note I went out in my old mans boat 2 weekends ago and what did I see in the water while fishing? 2 huge Bullsharks. After pondering whether I should jump in and beat the shit outta them I clamly decided to get the fuck outta there.

peace.

No thats the Blue bottle Jellyfish aka Portugese Man Of War (grrrr:mad: I hate that second name)

She lost so much blood because her arms got literally ripped off and her legs seriously damaged. It's believed she got attacked by 3 Bull Sharks. She was only 21 and i feel really sorry for her and her family/friends.

On that note, don't EVER swim between Dusk & Dawn. Thats when the large fish come out and even larger fish to get them. Also stay between flags and swim in beaches with sharknets.

peace.

Yeah actually, kinda surprised there havent been any here yet this summer... quick touch wood. I'd like to do one of those cage dive things but seems like a dumb idea to invite the sharks using blood and guts only to tease them through the bars... kinda like asking for trouble. Nevertheless, I think they're fascinating.

I'll just stick to swimming pools. I dont think beaches are monitored or equipped with sharknets much in SA, at least not many or the ones near me.

I would also like to do the cage diving.

Some kid got attacked not long ago there while surfing didn't he? He did turn out ok though.

Also do you remember when the humpback whale died off the coast in S.A.? And the massive white pointer shark frenzy was happening then some idiot decided to jump ontop of the whale carcus? Man had he fallen, well.. some apparent 47 great whites vs. idiot man.

peace.

A kid died last year I think it was. Was just riding a donut or something behind a boat and a shark got him. Quick as that... all the friends in the boat witnessed it. Scary. Was a popular suburban beach too. There's also this story about a woman (happened a couple decades ago though) who was teaching a swim class, jumped off the jetty to show the students and went pretty much straight into one's jaws.. body never recovered.

There was this thing on tv not that long about about shark attacks and it was mostly filmed in Adelaide and South Africa and they described all the attack styles and real gave examples of each that had happened. Really interesting stuff. Like one of the surfers who had been attacked and survived said though, they are just doing whats in their nature in their own territory... you step in that territory, you bare the risk.

Yeah I saw that shit on territorial sharks. It was a dope watch.

That reminds me of this (dumb ass) woman who went swimming among seals in a black diving suit. Needless to say, a Great White killed her.

^Oh yeah thats stupid!
I think that Shark Diving shit needs to stop, I saw something about how in areas where they have that the shark numbers are going up and sharks are approaching boats more often since they are starting to relate boats to food!
Shit happens, the amount of people that go swimming every year and the amount of shark attacks is enough for me to take my chances.

They had a whole show on box jelly fish on the Discovery Channel. They are the most deadly jelly fish, also the smallest. They just dont sting you they deliver spores into you. You dont die right away either, the people studying them got stung, a spore was on her glove and she rubbed it and it stung her, thats how strong they are. Vinegar is used for any common burn or whatever though, I think it is one of those home remedies though. The show made it sound like there was a huge thng about them in Austrailia, like everyone knew about them, what they were, i mean everything, guess not. It's sad but being that young, she had no chance whatsoever. Especially since they can only treat you as the symptoms come, they can't predict them. The things are so small though, they got one into captivity and the little tank they had it in, they had to have a running current in their so it didnt hit the glass, if it did it would die, that is how small they are, nearly microscopic.
