What Is Alternative Rap?
This ever-evolving genre encompasses a wide range of styles, most of which stay true to the of vision hip-hop's founding fathers. As a concept, alternative rap first came into being after the release of De La Soul's 1989 album 3 Feet High and Rising. It's since grown to be a broad category, and musically speaking it remains extremely diverse. Artists tend to explore and try new things: sampling obscure records, incorporating live instrumentation, utilizing the talents of artists from unlikely genres. MCs tend to rap about a broad scope of topics, their lyrics often containing political messages or socioeconomic commentary. And as hip-hop's popularity grew, mainstream alternative-rock stations also began including alternative-rap artists such as the Beastie Boys and Arrested Development on their playlists.
Notable Artists: Beastie Boys, Freestyle Fellowship, the Fugees, Lauryn Hill, the Roots
What Is Bass Music?
The distinct "boom" of the 808 kick drum used commonly in bass music helped distinguish this Southern-born genre from the sounds of other regions. Technically, bass music is a direct offspring of electro--specifically West Coast electro. Lyrically, the music is topped with party-based rhymes that frequently contain raunchy and sometimes misogynistic wordplay. 2 Live Crew's Move Somethin' was the first nationally recognized effort from this genre, as well as the first rap album to receive a "parental advisory" warning sticker. DJ Magic Mike furthered the genre, and bass music eventually helped spawn the careers of the Quad City DJs and Lil Jon, who attained widespread commercial success. Bass music also is called "booty bass" and "Miami bass."
Notable artists: MC Shy D, Uncle Al, Rodney O & Joe Cooley, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Tag Team
What Is Beats/Instrumental Hip-Hop?/What Is Confrontational?/What Is Dirty Rap?/What is G-Funk/Gangsta Rap/Golden Age/Jazz Rap well etc
Hip-hop is a postmodern style of music borne of the fiercely impoverished neighborhoods of the South Bronx borough of New York City during the early 1970s. The rough economic situation and subsequent closure of many government-funded music programs led people to remake, rearrange, or remix existing recordings into completely different compositions with the use of turntables. DJs would extend the break or "get down" section of previously released songs by alternating between duplicate copies of a vinyl recording with the use of two turntables and a mixer. Soon MCs entered the equation to enhance the DJ's efforts and act as a crowd moderator. Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc is credited with creating this medium that soon blossomed into a subculture that encompassed five main components: DJing, MCing, beat-boxing, graffiti, and break dancing. In time, live instruments, drum machines, synthesizers, and computers became the tools by which artists created their music. The first hip-hop recordings, made in the late '70s and early '80s, exposed the genre to a national audience, and by the turn of the century it morphed into a worldwide phenomenon. As a result, numerous subgenres and fusions of hip-hop were developed based largely upon the geographic, musical, and environmental influences prevalent in each particular region of the world.
Notable Artists: Public Enemy, the Wu-Tang Clan, Grandmaster Flash, Snoop Dogg
What Is British Rap?
During the mid-'80s, hip-hop began to emerge from countries beyond the United States, the first being the U.K. The same basic U.S. production techniques and philosophies were applied by early British rap acts Derek B. and the Cookie Crew. Many British hip-hop artists also incorporated Jamaican-style vocals, resulting in a subgenre called ragamuffin, which is unique from American rap and reggae. In many cases, though, the outstanding difference between U.K. rap and its U.S. cousin remains the dominating presence of the British dialect.
Notable Artists: Daddy Freddy, Stereo MCs, Hijack, Roots Manuva, Braintax, Dizzee Rascal
What Is Dirty South?
Atlanta's Goodie Mob named a song "Dirty South" on its 1995 Soul Food album. The term subsequently caught on as moniker for the distinct sound that was beginning to emerge from the American South during the mid-'90s. Characteristics of the genre--which was later also dubbed crunk or bounce rap--that set it apart include slower, double-time drumbeats and rhymes that are executed with a distinct drawl.
Notable Artists: Outkast, Lil Jon, Master P, Ludacris, Chingy
What Is East Coast Rap?
Since hip-hop emerged out of New York City, for a time all rap music was 'East Coast rap.' By 1979, hip-hop parties were being exposed to communities outside the South Bronx--where the music had all started--and this eventually led to the art form being recorded and released on vinyl. Among the first were the Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" and Fatback's "King Tim III." As the music gained momentum, the MC slowly evolved from being the DJ's hype man to become the music's main focal point. Run DMC was the first rap group to legitimize the genre by gaining acceptance from mainstream media. East Coast rap was individualized as a genre after artists from other parts of the United States (chiefly the West Coast) emerged with different styles of hip-hop. As a general rule, East Coast MCs emphasize lyricism coupled with production centered on the use of a drum machine.
Notable Artists: Slick Rick, Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Gang Starr, the Notorious B.I.G., Nas
