Sold "As Is"

What the heck does that mean? I'm on ebay looking at stuff and some sellers have "sold as is." As opposed to what, sold as it's not? The item is described as brand new. Sold as is makes me then think that it's not brand new. "As is." You mean there's no gold plating on the CD? "As is." How about lunch, does it include lunch? "As is."

So tell me is there any reason to ever say "sold as is" in an ebay auction that's not for something like, say, a car?

as is meaning that any defects there may be you have to deal with and they are not responsible for fixing them, or as a matter of fact they are not even legally responsible to tell you about them; that is unless it poses a danger to you.

it's a get out of jail free card and you as a buyer should steer away from that kind of tactic. "hey, it looked new so i sold it. i had no idea that there was no logic board in that computer."

I don't think it is a legally binding term though is it....

Say she has advertised it as new, but sold as is. If it isn't new then her description isn't right and you would be due a refund. But as it is ebay, which we all know is severly corrupt, then it is all down to how much the seller regards their feedback.

let's say that you make a living off of selling cds on ebay. you can't possible listen through every cd to make sure there are no errors. you can't look through all booklets to make sure none are ripped a little. in such cases, i guess you could say "sold as is" because if there's something wrong with the merchandise, you simply did not know.

but like dante said, it's a precautionary measure should anything go wrong, and i find it fishy.
