Another thread dedicated by a post by someone in a different thread, this time SOFI in the Putin thread.

Once again thought it deserved a wider discussion.

[Putin is] making [Russia] stronger geo-politically and economically, while the social conditions in his country are deteriorating. Kind of like Bush, without the economic factor.

That actually explains what is happening in Australia pretty well, our government is only concerned with geo-politics at economics, while things such as our health care system and education system are suffering and heading towards US-like crapness.

It seems to be the trend in the western world nowdays. For some reason it really reminds me of the way I play games, at first I try to play everything equal but then it becomes one last mad dash for the finish line just to win and quality suffers. I know its a weird analogy but it's just the first thing that popped into my head.

...and education system are suffering and heading towards US-like crapness.

..no, you didnt say it, did you?lol

Well, what Sofi said concerning the deteriorating of social conditions: In germany the government tries to improve the education system as well as the social system. What can be observed throughout the last years (thanks to globalisation) is that the gap between rich and poor gets bigger, nearly everywhere.

My mother is in Berlin right now and has heard people talking about how the youth are ruining their lives because they can rely on the social system to keep them afloat.

How does that explain the United States?

It's hard to find a balance between social welfare and competitiveness. I think their need to be some safety nets, but not enough to discourage most employment and work ethic (any safety nets means at least minute discouragement).

Education needs to be more highly prioritized. It is the most important input to human capital. It has a positive effect on work, health, and general well-being and success.

America has the best secondary education in the world. Problem is much of our own youth can't take advantage of it because much of our primary education is so shitty. Personally, I'd give up a few more nukes to provide for our schools and children.

Thats somehow true. People can always depend on our social system, not for nothing do people all over the world say its the "best" in the world. For people getting welfare, at least. Not for those who work.
Due to demographic change, its not gonna be like that for the next decades though. Politicians and co are debating about completely changing the social system...but thats a whole other story.

So true. I would support that.

i say take it back to the stoneage. give it a decade and there'll have been so many duels that half the world's population will have been killed by challengers. then reinstate democracy. problem solved. i should be president.
