Kanye West leads the pack with the most Grammy nominations this year. Kanye is also famous for throwing a tantrum every time he ends up being beaten out by anyone else for any other award. This time around, we think maybe Kanye should be crossing his fingers in hopes that he doesn't win.
Our times are choked with so many awards shows, it's impossible to really take any of them seriously anymore. Sure, the Grande Old Dames like the Emmys, the Oscars, the Tonys, and the Grammys seem to garner the most attention and respect; but do they really deserve either anymore?
Honestly, of the shortlisted awards shows, we would have to say that the Grammys are the least indicative of the arts scene it is connected to. If anything, the Grammys do an excellent job highlighting just how unwilling the music industry is to even acknowledge, much less embrace, the changes that are tearing its corporate structure apart at the seams.
So, is it really a compliment for a forward thinking artist such as Kanye to be "honored" by an organization that is obviously so behind the times? Wouldn't that signal that they're not really respecting Kanye's musical contributions as much as they're leveraging his popularity to prop up their own sagging influence?
So wouldn't it be better if Kanye lost? Or, better yet, pulled a Brando and just sent a statement-making emissary — say, the woman whose kid upset Prince so much a while ago — to refuse any awards he was unlucky enough to win?
