Shocking anerexia websites

This is disgusting:

Mental health groups are calling for the closure of websites that promote anorexia.

A study has found nearly half the people who visited them felt the sites led them to self harm.

A majority of those polled for the mental health charity SANE had considered suicide within the last month.

The so-called 'pro-anorexia' websites promote ultra-thin looks on people who suffer from the eating disorder.

They have titles like Starving For Perfection, 2b-Thin and Totally in Control.

Some even offer hints and tips on how to starve yourself while hiding it from those around you.

In many cases they are forums for people with eating disorders who do not want to be cured.

SANE surveyed 150 users of the websites and most said they made them feel worse about their bodies.

Some 40% of those polled said the sites led them to self harm.

More than a million Britons are estimated to suffer from an eating disorder.

You can't close a website like that and you shoudln't cause this is freedom of speech. Everybody has a brain and the right to use it and whoever lets a website push him/herself so far is obviously 2 stupid 2 live.

This is a pro-ana website. That means this is a place where anorexia is regarded as a lifestyle and a choice, not an illness or disorder. There are no victims here.

here is something i read that just made me ill:

Hey okay so I just read these other people's comments and don't even bother listening to dumb people like them. Augh they disgust me, they're probably just fat themselves and they're too much in denial to admit that they don't have the beautiful bodies that they think they do. That pisses me off so much, people who have no desire to make themselves better so they sit around and criticize the people doing all the work. Well, just think...who'll have the last laugh? Much love, and stay strong...too bad ignorant people with no knowledge whatsoever of what they're talking about want to leave nasty comments like that... one of them said her target weight was like uner 100lbs!!! that is just wrong! (she said her highest weight was 160lbs and was disgusted with her self)

it has been going on about these sites on the radio, and someone said they actually help them recover from eating disorders - how the fuck to they do that???

still those girls have a brain and are allowed to think. I dunno, don't get me wrong, yes those girls are ill, but what I don't like is that those girls always seem 2 get way more sympathy the npeople that abuse liquor or drugs for example and for me, that's pretty much about the same - they lost control as well. But when did u last say "oh look this poor junkie" - I never hear people sayin that, they say it's their fault to start with this shit, which is of course true to a certain extent, but if society is as harsh on those peeps, I think those girls should be treated and seen exactly the same way.

being a drug addict or an alcoholic is an addiction it isn't the same thing

I don't think so. I needs a certain mental illness or situation 2 become addicted in first place - and if you don't agree - wouldn't it be then harder and therefor be a bigger success to get away from an addiction then from anerexia because you don't only have 2 leave your mental illness but also the drugs behind you?

menace i see your point.....i have known alcoholics, drug addicts and ppl with eating disorders. seeing as i went to school to be a drug and alcohol councelor i do feel that they have a diesase and can not help it anymore, bc they are past the point of return the same as someone who starting starving themselves to lose a few pounds and is now addicted to it and can't control it anymore. everyone in those situations needs help and needs ppl there for them to help them through their tough times ahead

The.Menace, by definition anorexia is an emotional disorder where people basically have a distorted self-image of their weight. The eating part is a result of this disorder, not the cause. The sequence is anorexia --> eating disorder, not eating disorder --> anorexia.
I don't have anorexia and I haven't talked to anyone with anorexia so I don't know to what extent starving yourself is free choice. I don't think you should speak of free choice unless you have researched it. Have you?
Same goes to k69atie though. Have you done enough research to know that it's 100% not a choice?

And if you really want to talk about the level of sympathy people should receive, anorexic people should have more sympathy than addicts. You become an addict through taking drugs and not stopping them before your body becomes dependent on it, while anorexia is a disorder that influences your behaviour. You don't get anorexia from starving yourself.
