An Australian man has been sentenced to 20 years' jail in Vietnam for trying to smuggle 150 grams of heroin into Australia by post.
Tony Tran, 43, an Australian of Vietnamese descent, was arrested in May last year at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat airport after trying to send the heroin inside laminated photographs, in 15 envelopes, to Australian addresses.
He was caught after a postal officer 500 kilometres north of Ho Chi Minh City became suspicious and reported the packages to police.
Tran pleaded guilty but insisted the packages contained only 75 grams of heroin, mixed with powder.
But the court said the packages contained 150 grams of heroin.
Tran escaped a death sentence, which can be imposed in Vietnam for crimes involving more than 100 grams of heroin. "He was given the lightest sentence," court official Nguyen Van Minh told Deutsche Presse Argentur.
Mr Minh said the court heard Tran and his girlfriend bought the heroin in Ho Chi Minh City and tried to post it in small portions.
Tran's Vietnamese girlfriend, Le Thi Van, 33, was given a 15-year sentence at the two-day trial's conclusion in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.
Court officials said Van's sentence was lower than Tran's because she was involved in smuggling only 40 grams of heroin.
Tran is believed to have no previous criminal record. He was represented at the trial by a private Vietnamese lawyer but an Australian consular officer was present, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman in Canberra said yesterday.
Tran has 15 days to launch an appeal.
Two other Australians are on death row in Vietnam, convicted of drug offences.
