sampling

basically i think i really need to get into sampling just cuz it takes me too long to think of my own melody and when i do i feel i got it from something else...i know people sample using vinyl, but do u have to get a turntable that hooks up to your computer? and how do u chop up the sample? also how u all choose wat vinyl to buy and where u get it at? i appreciate any help...thanxz

you dont have to sample from vinyl, plenty of producers sample from cds. ive read interviews with kanye west were he talks about how he has started to sample more from cds than vinyl.

but sampling from vinyl can have its perks, you can get better sounding kicks or snares. for example old country music has really nice sounding snares.

as for where to buy vinyl, i buy it from all over, flea markets, yard sales, stores, mom and pop record shops, online, etc

how do you chop it up? well, just look at the wave form of the audio file or clip, find what part you want to sample and take it out. edit it to your liking. make sure you start and end on the zero crossing point so you wont get a clip or pop sound at the end of your sample

aight assuming i sample (which id only use for melody no drums and bass)...whether it from cd's or vinyl how do i get that shit onto my computer? also anyone know around what percentage of beats are sampled? for ex like a song like "if i cant" by 50 cent...it seems easy enoguh to play by yourself, but how u know if its sampled?

if you want to know if a song contains a sampled just look in the credits, it will say in there if it is or not.

if it is cd just pop the cd into your driver on the computer and bring it up on a program that lets you do some simple editing.

as far as vinyl on your computer, there are programs that can do it that can hook up through usb and rca's. i dont use them so i cant go into too much more detail about them.

aight thanxz a lot i appreciate it....if anyone does use those programs or uses vinyl for sampling im just curious what program i should use to chop up the samples? right now im just working with reason so im not sure if there is a specific program that goes with it

you can use reason in all sort of programs, cubase, protools etc you dont even need a big name program to chop samples. there are freeware out there you can search for all over the net that will let you edit audio
