Russell Simmons named UN Goodwill Ambassador

Russell Simmons, the current CEO of Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) and co-founder of Def Jam, is about to become one of the Permanent Observer Missionaries to the United Nations Goodwill Ambassadors in his work for CISRI-ISP.

CISRI-ISP is an organisation set up to aid famine and erode dangerous malnutrition in countries that need it across the world. The Rome-based aid agency welcomes Simmons and his endeavours with HSAN, and is excited to expand into the hip-hop community as part of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

"The underlying goal of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network is to end poverty and ignorance," said Simmons. "We're going to help save lives. We will not be silenced in the face of the awful fact that more than 40,000 people die every day from malnutrition and poverty. That is unacceptable to the Hip-Hop community.”

The president of HSAN, Dr. Benjamin Chavis has also been named as a Goodwill Ambassador but “Being a Goodwill Ambassador is not just ceremonial,” he said. “We're rolling up our sleeves and look forward to working with the United Nations on these issues."

"Our job is to wake more people up to this reality," he added. “Hip-Hop culture is global and, as we strive to take back responsibility, the life saving issues of ending poverty and malnutrition are most urgent."
