Non-Urban Music Rock Record of 2005

#1
After just finishing a quick listen of The Darkness' new record on Rhapsody (I didn't NOT like it, it's just they sound too tongue-in-cheek to be taken as a serious band, they're Spinal Tap "to Eleven"), I decided now's a good time to get opinions on the best rock record of 2005; I think all the major releases are done for the year anyway, right?

First of all, I think Audioslave's Out of Exile definitely made my list of the biggest musical disappointments of the year (along with Stevie Wonder's record as a whole and the fact that Crooked I couldn't get his act together this year); to go from as stunningly hard-rocking as their debut was, to not only a mellower, but wayward, meandering record with no focus or drive to it (which both Rage and Soundgarden had, that's for sure), made me shake my head. Like Stevie's record (different genre, but bear with me), it had maybe 3 or 4 KILLER tracks to it, and NOTHING else.

Anyway, here's my list of the five top records that ROCKED (in their own ways, and in my humble opinion):

5. Oasis-Don't Believe the Truth (I just loved the entire vibe of this record, there may not be one AMAZING song in the bunch, but the bluesy, muddy, mid '60's mood to the record made just about all the songs work, Lyla especially)

4. Foo Fighters-In Your Honor (It would be much higher on the list if it was one disc of ten songs, mostly taken from the first, harder disc, but I've always liked Dave Grohl, I like his hard-working style of music (Probot, Queens of the Stone Age, etc.), and "DOA" and "Best of You" are definitely hard-rocking singles)

3. Queens of the Stone Age-Lullabies to Paralyze (I've very seldom been sucked into the mood of a record as much as I was in this, hazy, murky, dreamlike experience. Stoner-rock, Monster Magnet-lite, IMO, and I loved it, especially "Everybody Knows You're Insane")

2. Turbonegro-Party Animals (The difference between this band and The Darkness, is the simple fact that Turbonegro still rocks hard without going over the top, they're not parodies of themselves, and I love this record even more than their earlier records, "High on the Crime" is a very anthemic song)

1. System of a Down-Mezmerize/Hypnotize (Could it have been any other record, really? I consider this a double album, and I've always been critical of double albums, but while I think this could have been trimmed down to one disc, neither record is really weaker than the other. I've found myself really liking "Attack" as an opening track, just a blitzkrieg, bludgeoning opening track as I've ever heard one)

Disturbed's record was very disappointing, whatever the hell the White Stripes were trying to do didn't work at all, and I've never been one to jump on the Coldplay wagon, I just don't get where they're coming from. Maybe that's why I hate U2 so much.

Just thought I'd throw that in :)

I can't stand The Darkness. Like you said, I just can't take them seriously.

I haven't heard "A Time To Love" yet, but based on "So What The Fuss" I'm looking forward to. Co-sign on the Audioslave thing, Rage and Soundgarden both had focus. This album seems to have absolutely no direction.

I hate Oasis. They just remind me that this country is full of flag-supporting neo-colonial alcoholic football hooligan piss-smellers

Like you said, I would have liked it much more without all the acoustic songs. 1 or 2 of them were OK but I didn't like most of them. And for the record I fucking LOVE the probot album, especially "Red War" with Max Cavalera, as Sepultura and Soulfly are my favorite bands.

co-sign. QOTSA fucking rock, although this album is nowhere near as good as "songs for the deaf"

I haven't heard this.

Co-sign. System rule. I was VIP at their gig in London, very cool guys and their set fucking rocked.

You're right about Disturbed. I fucking love Disturbed, "The Sickness" is one of my favorite rock albums, but this new album is average. I can't stand Coldplay, boring bastards.

My top 5:

1. SOAD - Mezmerize/Hypnotize
2. KoRn - See You On The Other Side
3. Soulfly - Dark Ages
4. Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
5. QOTSA - Lullabies To Paralyze

Notable Mentions:

Foo Fighters - In Your Honour
Skindred-Babylon (major label release)
Slipknot - Volume 3 : The Subliminal Verses
Killswitch Engage - The End of Heartache

-------------------------
Can't believe I forgot NIN! I edited my list, and Foo Fighters have been bumped out of the top 5, sorry Dave but some of those acoustic songs were really lame.

I've always appreciated your contributions to the different threads I've put out over the past few months, and it's nice to know I'm writing things, voicing opinions that you can relate to and agree with (for the most part, though I still disagree with you about our Purple Rain and Sign O' the Times argument a few months ago :) ).

Now check out Stevie's new record and get back to me, that record is amazing and a huge disappointment at the same time (kinda like Quik's new record, which wasn't/isn't nearly as disappointing as Stevie's record was/is).

Thanks man. I appreciate you're contributions too. Repped.

Sign O The Times > Purple Rain, still though....lol we could argue about this for years so maybe we should just leave it.

I will check out the Stevie record soon. And yeah the DJ quik album was sick, but disappoiting in a way. I totally know what you mean. I found myself bigging up that album to everyone for about a week, and after that I went back to listening to "Safe & Sound" etc

Good thread. I'm kinda surprised all the albums that have been named thus far are all commercial or mainstream... but it's all good :)

Here are my top rock albums of the year

Silent Alarm - Bloc Party
Frances The Mute - The Mars Volta
Catch Without Arms - Dredg
With Teeth - Nine Inch Nails

And some non-rock albums..

Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
Feel The Illinoise - Sufjan Stevens

Damn, how the hell could I miss "With Teeth" off my list? I'm listening to NIN right now lol! Granted, I'm listening to "The Fragile" but "With Teeth" is a great album too. I'll edit my list.

There were tons of great albums released this year;

New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Sufjan Stevens - Come On Feel The Illinoise
Sigur Ros - Takk
The Decemberists - Picaresque
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
Editors - The Back Room
Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow

Unfortunately I don't own any of those. Yet. And some of them aren't really "rock" records.

Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Jack Johnson, Brendan Benson, Beck, A and the Js, The Go! Team and The Magic Numbers all put out really good albums, rock or not.

my top albums of 2005 are.....

1 - System Of A Down - Mezmerize/Hypnotize

Easily the best album of 2005 in every genre of music, the only competition would have to be Damian Marley's "Welcome To Jamrock", but when it comes to "rock" this was easily the album of 2005, the message, the music, daron coming full circle and taking a more vocal part on the songs.... simply amazing

2 - Propagandhi - Potemkin City Limits

It took them awhile to release this, and after listening to it 2-3 times you know why. The album is fuckin amazing, the message is unmatched, the lyrics are incredible, and the music is all over the place but mostly right in your face the majority of the time. Propagandhi was in my maybe top 20 bands but after falling in love with this album they skyrocketed to arguably top 5.

3 - Buckethead & Friends - Enter The Chicken

Wasn't sure what to expect when I heard this, but I was extremely curious to hear it since it was produced by System Of A Down's lead singer Serj. And wow, what a musical adventure it is, Serj is on two tracks, Saul Williams on one, Dirk Rogers from Bad Acid Trip on another, and even an opera singer on one. Buckethead just puts his fingers to work and gets his friends to jump on board and do the singing and this is one of those cd's where you can just listen to it and it takes you away.... far far away .... to a good place.

honorable mentions go to

Against Me - Searching For A Former Clarity
Skindread - Babylon
Coheed & Cambria - Good Apolo I'm A Burning Star IV Volume 1

I like Buckethead, from the stuff I've heard. Crazy KFC-bucket wearing motherfucker. I just saw the video for "We Are One" ft. Serj, yesterday. crazy shit, but i liked it.

Yeah, lol. It makes me laugh remembering that, thinking of Buckethead on stage with Axl. He also auditioned to be in Ozzy's band, Ozzy said he could be in it if he took off the bucket, and he refused. lol.

it was actually to be part of ozzfest

buckethead said ok, but came back to the room in a martian suit instead and ozzy was like wtf just forget it, also bucketheads real name is brian and ozzy wouldnt call him buckethead he would only call him brian and the big b was like only my mother calls me brian and ozzy said well pretend im your mother then

he was in guns n roses for 2 years, toured with them and recorded a bunch of tracks for chinease democracy, but seeing how axl rose is a racist and buckethead is about peace i can see how that relationship went south fast

the we are one video is badass

he is my favourite guitarist, besides maybe jimi or the guitarist from pink floyd there is really nobody who can speak through a guitar like he does

/\ yeah, thats right, i remember now. As far as Axl being a racist, I do think it was fucked up, the shit he was saying on "One In A Million"... but if he was that much of a racist, he would have had more of a problem with Slash, cos Slash is half black.

and yeah, the We Are One video is sick. Fucked up in true buckethead style, lol.

yea theres slash, slash also left the band and has absolutely nothing to do with axl now, like just about anybody who spent long periods of time with him band members or not

theres also axl's incident with living colour (? can't remember the bands name but im pretty sure thats it)on stage where he straight out disrespected them with racial slurs

theres also his love for the confederate flag

buckethead on the other hand, that video was obviously directed by serj from soad, and its cool since they are both pretty pro-animal rights, its like the revenge of the animals with the statement of the song "we are one"

i dunno if youve seen any of the net videos , but you should check out buckethead solos, first he does some crazy nun chuck action, then some robot dancing, and then hell break out the guitar , shred and just go off like a madaman
