Anyone see the movie before? With Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet?

I was sooo sleepy and stuff when seeing it, I don't remember much.

...but it has to be one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen.

Can anyone comment on it? If not I wont write a big review, but both people were kind of crazy.

It wasn't that great, but it offered a relationship from different angles.

Regardless of it sucked or not, this movie presents a lot to talk about.

*SPOILERS*
Was the guy psycho? Girl?

The whole theory of going elsewhere because the American Dream was ruining their relationship, etc.

The movie is mostly about suburb and american conformity of the 1950s. How fitting in was the most important thing, as was displaying that illusion of 'living the American dream'. The relationship failing was mostly due to a difference in paths they wanted to take. The wife was obviously a lot more free spirited, while Di Caprio, while he made it seem like he was, believed in conforming in the end.

I don't think neither was insane. You can argue she never wanted kids, and feels it ruined her life and goals (acting and such) ... then you can argue that Di Caprio hid behind her accidental pregnancy, and never really wanted to leave. One of those all talk, no action type of guys.

The only one that unveiled American suburbia society in the 1950s is the son of the real estate agent who was deemed 'insane' for speaking his mind, and being politically incorrect, which was something frowned upon in the States during those days. The Communism scare of the 1950s added to the whole ideal of conformity, because people over and over again would be accused of being a communist if they acted out of place, so people fell into line and shut up in fear of losing their jobs and being persecuted (McCarthyism). It wasn't talked about a lot in the movie, but there were references to it.

Damn Flip, you went all out, if that wasn't an excerpt from somewhere. hahaha

Did you, by any chance read the book?

I think the main thing I learned about this movie, is that you start to fall in love with people because of the things you don't know about them, but start to hate/dislike them once you see the full picture.

In the end, I think the same neither was insane... My sister thought the girl was psycho.

I thought when he looked at the calendar, he felt that it might not have been his kid.....which I think, made it easier for him to cheat. In fact, I don't think it was his kid at all, and that's more the reason why she wanted to abort it. I think she used Paris as an excuse.

I also think that maybe Leo should have been more supportive of Kate, since she failed at acting, or w/e.

...and...did you agree with the approach of showing flash backs of good times during marriage, or did u think they should have shown a good marriage first, than show it derail as it went by?

Nope didn't read the book. I heard it's much better though, and gives more insight into their relationship.

The flashbacks I thought it's what they actually aspired to be. They both had goals and dreams, and she fell in love with that guy who didn't really have a plan. This obviously relates to what you said about falling in love with people because of the things you don't know about them. I think it's good the way they showed it though. I don't know about you, but the times where my relationship was failing I always looked back at the old times and wondered what happened, or how to bring that back. Seemed more realistic.

I dunno about the child not being his - it seems he was the only unfaithful one at first. I think it was his kid personally, and I do think it wasn't a sabotage. John Lennon once said that 'Life is what happens when you're out making plans' ... this was a case of it. They were so preoccupied with the trip and moving that they forgot about everything else, in this case, they had sex without worrying about the consequences (they could have used condoms, they did exist back then lol).

The end just confirms that Leo actually loved his wife despite it all. He probably feels his attitude was the cause of it. The breakfast scene after the huge fight was eerie as hell, as I've been through the same thing (minus the eggs, she couldn't cook)... If you haven't been through it, I hope you don't. You get all paranoid and shit lol.

Also, notice how the sex only lasted like a minute, sometimes like 30 seconds. I thought that was interesting, showed how men just cared about getting off (a lot of ppl back then still believed women got no pleasure out of sex lol).

All I remember is that I was disappointed in the film. I didn't like the flashbacks, I think that just complicated things.. From memory (and its not a good one) the story dragged and I think by constantly going back and forth I kind just wanted it to get to a point. Sometimes I like movies that are like that but I think it depends on the story, sometimes I just wanna see the relationship evolve so I can understand better how it got to that point.

I do remember thinking they were fucking stupid.

^lol, yeah. but a lot of relationships mess up that way. It's very rare that a couple knows a lot of how to make the first one work and ride it smoothly....but because they are so eager to make it work (because the love is real) they end up getting married, have kids, or move in and rush it and fuck it all up. It really makes all sense, imo.

@Flip: Yeah, I've had that happened (The eggs thing, AND with eggs) that was why it was sooo fucking creepy. It's happened a few times. I felt like maybe there was poison in my eggs or as soon as i finished, she was going to kill me. @hiphoplatinaqueen.

lmfao

oh, and when the guy said he loved Kate when they were boning, it made it seem like they have been cheating a LONG time.
