Atlanta, GA (AHN) – Ralph Sampson, the former national college basketball player of the year, is taken in to custody for failing to pay court-ordered child support.
If convicted, the 44-year former NBA all star could face up to $250,000 in fines and two years behind bars on each of two felony counts.
The U.S. Attorney says Sampson, who lives in suburban Atlanta, owes more than $6,000 to a daughter in Falmouth, VA.
Officials say he is also charged with non-compliance of a previous court order to pay support to a daughter in Alexandria, VA. He owes $247,500 in that case dating back to 1988.
In 1983, the 7’4” Sampson was the top overall draft pick by the Houston Rockets, he also played for the Sacramento Kings and the Washington Bullets. He starred at the University of Virginia in college leading his team to the Final Four.
