During an MSN chat with S O F I S T I K, he claimed I said some shit that I never said. I replied, "Show me where I contradicted myself...I'll eat this fucking hat beside me".

Now later on, he told me he thought that this was a completely retarded thing to say. I told him that "I'll eat my hat if......" is a common figure of speech. An idea which he didn't believe.

So quite simply, who here hasn't heard someone use this figure of speech, "I'll eat my hat if [insert something unlikely]"?

Am I right in saying it's common?

well john d. ruckerduck, when he bets with scrooge, says that if he loses he's going to eat his hat. i realize that the term wasn't born in donald duck comics, but that's further proof it is actually a term that people use.

Oh no, you're not going at Sofistik too, are you? I think we should put up a public sign warning people not to argue with people or he'll start eating hats. :p

Whenever you tell me something (i.e. "I'll eat this hat..."), I take it very serious.

I use that phrase all the time. Also, I use many diffrent variations of it...but i wont get into that because it would take too long.
