question for vegetarians

a thought occurred to me while at work today, i was working on the pastry section in the kitchen making fresh desserts for the a la carte restaurant, and i came to wonder how picky are vegetarians when it comes to choosing and picking desserts to eat

i thought since most desserts are flour and sugar based and can't name even one single dessert dish off the top of my head that even contains meat, i concluded that the only instance a vegetarian would reject a dessert dish is on account of it's fat content, for example if the dish contained animal fats in the pastry or the cooking/ baking procedure etc

since a lot of cooking requires the use of fats, do you vegetarians eat a lot of jelly and ice cream, or trifle like desserts that have little or no cooking fat involved?

^ no it is only Vegans that don't eat dairy products, i never mentioned vegans or dairy products ...

edit: this thread is not about vegans, read first post

I think most vegetarians also avoid milk and eggs.

Vegan = a strict vegetarian.

Some would drink milk while others would avoid dairy products.

The most common group of vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians, eat both eggs and dairy products.

It all depends on whether the person is also a vegetarian because of health reasons. I don't eat most regular desserts because I avoid trans fats, sugar, and white flour. But not many veggies eat for health.

Odd question since dessert isn't really a regular meal to me. I just woke up so my brain is fried but right now I can't even think of a single dessert that I couldn't eat because of animal fats. I barely eat at restaurants (I think the cooking usually isn't worth the price), never eat jelly and not really into ice cream.

why would a vegetarian eat a dessert dish that contains animal fats? or any dish for that matter, that's why i suggested Jelly as an ideal dessert for vegetarians because it contains no animal fats, Jelly is basically just fruit, liquid, sugar

another thing as well, i used to work in a kitchen where the deep fat fryers used beef dripping instead of vegetable oil. they were like big blocks of lard as big a breeze block of pure beef fat, would a vegetarian be ok with eating a chip butty cooked in beef fat, on principle i think not; which is why i ask are vegetarians eclectic when it comes to choosing what desserts to eat and what not to eat

Gelatin is made from animal bones and skin.
When he said jelly, for some reason I was thinking of the kind you use with peanut butter, like preserves. But now it's clear to me he did mean gelatin.

Yes, Yeshua, vegetarians favorite dessert would be animal bones and skin. Boy, for someone who works in the food business, you sure don't know much about ingredients, or the source of them.

damn you glock and joker man, i was trying to catch the vegetarians out, you both ruined my thread :notrust:

So you could e-point and say "haha you eat something made of animal bones and skin"?

...why?

im not keen on vegans because they are more prone to being diagnosed with oesteoporosis. why would they want to put themselves at risk of that? can understand not eating meats, but milk and eggs etc if they dont have an intolerance or allergy.

cant remember what diet it is now, south beach or some other regime gives you smelly breath.

i wonder about diet sometimes, about how good are the veggies that we eat that have been genetically modified and had pesticides used on them. what is so bad about eating meat that is chemical free, i wonder ..
