Non-Urban Music Punk/Rock

I'm really into the punk and rock scene.. but nobody here seems to talk about it much.

I'm talking groups like Mars Volta, Sparta, At-The-Drive In, Muse, My Chemical Romance, Radiohead, Strokes, The Used etc..

Anyone else into any of these bands???

My Chemical Romance are OK, Radiohead are good. I can't stand The Mars Volta or At The Drive-In.

Hell is for Heroes are a class British band, check them out.

Yeah.. I didn't classify all the bands as punk.. I meant rock/punk in general. Muse and Radiohead are more of a soft/mellow rock IMO and Strokes have a very grunge sound.

Sparta don't really sound like ATDI at all, but people do label them as punk... I'd say.. nu-metal sound.

Sparta and the Mars Volta are both split-offs from ATDI. Sparta is much more conventional. TMV is some prog-rock shit.

I loved TMV's first album, the new one isn't really doing it for me, though. I'm trying, though. I'm going to see them next month, looking forward to it - I've heard the show is nuts.

Radiohead - everyone should like them, imo. The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A - if you can't find anything you can like on either three of those albums, I dunno what to tell you.

The Strokes, I like.

Last punk album I heard was The Evens' 12 Songs. If you weren't aware, the Evens is Ian McKaye's side projec to keep him busy while Fugazi's on hiatus. The album's very restrained, has an unplugged feel to it, I guess. I'll probably end up buying it, since Dischord is the epitome of non-shadiness.

As for as rock goes, albums this year that I'm listening to:
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
The Evens - 12 Songs
Iron & Wine - Woman King
Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak

I have a lot of Killers songs stuck in my head, but haven't actually played them since after their show last fall.

Not all of the bands ShockA listed are punk. Radiohead, Muse and The Strokes aren't. I'm not familiar with Sparta, but if they sound like At The Drive-In then they could be considered punk (or of a subgenre therein)
That site meantioned the Ramones and the Offspring. Bands like that, to me, epitomise "punk rock." The latter being an example of the crap! lol.

The only important punk bands are the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and the Clash.

Then, you've got new wave/post-punk music, headed by bands like Joy Division.

Rock and Punk Rock are different, of course. About rock in general, there are so many bands that I like. You mentioned Radiohead, one of my favorites. Generally I'd say they're one of my all-time favorites, along with the Beatles, Soul Coughing, and Pink Floyd. Joy Division is probably my favorite band, though.

I'm liking Iron & Wine a lot. Along with Antony and Johnsons, Mirah and Devendra Banhart.

You mention Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones... those are the old school punk bands.. and they're good.... but I think punk today is as strong as it was when those bands were around. So many good, unknown groups that are out there. Lot of people are missing out.

Eh. I don't really think the punk scene today is as relevant as it was in the mid to late 70s. There are some good bands out there, but I'm not sure they're even capable (through no fault of their own) of making the impact of the older bands.

I can't stand the Sex Pistols. Had I been 17 when they came out, I probably would have been a fan, but now I listen to their music and it just sounds...awful.

^ I agree. I think that once you're exposed to todays punk bands, the older ones just don't sound as good. And like you said Ill, if you had been 17 at the time, and they were perhaps the first punk band you listened to, then they would be good. And that's why I say todays punk scene is just as good as it was. Not "impact" wise, but sound and skill wise. There are so many great talents out there in punk.
