It's been speculated that the briefcase had the jewels from Reservoir Dogs. If you remember, there was a character in Reservoir Dogs by the name of Vinnie Vega, which some guess is supposed to be Vincent from Pulp Fiction.

The Reservoir Dogs character is Vic Vega (Mr. Blonde), and he definitely doesn't have the jewels from Reservoir Dogs

The Marcellus's soul hypothesis comes strictly from the combination code, and the "boss's dirty laundry" commentary. But as has been mentioned, the briefcase is whatever you want it to be.

I realized the mistake with Vic, but I never said that he had the jewels. The theory I read is that whoever managed to get the jewels was supposed to be bringing them to Marcellus. I just mentioned the Vega connection because they were supposed to be brothers. But you're right, it could be whatever you want it to be
