Pro Tools Volume Balance Problem

hey all

im having trouble getting a good balance between my beat and vocals volume. i usually normalize to %85.5, and from there try to find a good balance between beat and vocals, but i can never seem to find one thats consistent.

sometimes its the music at 0.0db and the vocals at +6.0db or beat @ -6 and vocals @ 0

what steps do you use, including what you set vocal and beat volume at

You can never really have the same specific standard because it depends on the volume you record, how close you stand to the mic, etc etc.

Usually what I do is mute the vocals then I turn the speakers all the way down and turn them up so I can JUST hear the beat, the base line more than anything, then I unmute the vocals, and turn them up until I can just hear them over the beat.
