Do any of you suffer with phobias? If so, what kind?

I have arachnophobia – I can’t stand spiders, I hate them so much. Here in England I only have house-spiders to contend with. Last night I had one crawling on my duvet whilst I was actually in bed. I can’t even kill them because I’m scared to get too close to them, they actually make me feel physically sick and want to cry. So last night I had to sleep on the sofa.

Any ideas on overcoming phobias? I know the most commonest is to actually face your fear, well I did that last night and well I still couldn’t stand up to the lil blighter! I’m seriously considering hypnosis.

That could be interesting. Especially because often it isnt the "thing" that is the problem, but rather other factors related to them, which you may be able to pin point through hypnosis.

I am really scared of snakes but I dont think there is a way to face that fear.... I've held a huge boa and touched a small snake.... but it's not the snake itself that scares me (although I do hate them) but that I might come across one in the wild and it will bite me and do serious harm. I cant confront that, it's a matter of chance - the only way to avoid it would be to move to NZ. lol.

Yup I mean thinking about my phobia rationally I have no idea why I'm so scared. They're not poisonous, they're not gonna kill me you know? So I'm like 'Pull yourself together!!' It kinda scares me the way they run so goddamn fast, and they are ugly and have too many legs, I just hate them - thinking about them now is kinda making me feel queasy. I know it sounds dumb but I really cannot help it.

I have no problem with snakes, held a few myself and they don't bother me. But yeah if I was to face one in the wild that would be a totally different matter.

That's why my house-spider phobia is so crazy though, I know they can't hurt me so what's my problem?

I dunno, i'm not scared of being in places high up, but it's when I look down or walk near the edge of something high I start to feel dizzy, guess it means I'm afraid of heights.

Haha, no shit, you hit the nail on the head. I'm not a big spider fan myself. I get "uneasy" when there's a spider near. I usually just catch em and release them outside.

I think its a shame to kill them because they are quite nifty little animals. Plus they eat mosquitoes and if there is 1 thing i hate....

I don't have real phobias. Heights arent my thing, though. And I'd rather take the stairs than the elevator too.

I really hated spiders some time ago, untill i started reading about the spiders that lives in my home, and found out that they are actually really nice to have around.

The species in my home kill other spiders :D thats great. Now ive found fun ways to interact with them... pick one up, and dumb it in another spiders net and watch the fight.

Thing is I can't go near them to pick them up to get rid of them. I can't even kill them cus I'm too scared. It's laughable really but now that autumn is here I get loads of spiders in my house, I hate it.

lol bout the spider fight though :)

Phobia is a sickness

just because someone is affraid of something like snakes or Spiders doesn't make it a phobia.
Most Phobias such as claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces) require clinical help to be cured, rather than just confrontation of fear

Yeah I think I may have to resort to some sort of 'professional' help with my spider phobia.
