Outlawz OUTLAWZ - Retribution - Review

Flaw review by JarG.

1. Intro
Outlawz talkin' bout their music and how their music is influenced by their families checkin' the on realness

2.Komatose 4/5
I've loved this song always, even in its bad CDQ. In my opinion, Kastro and Storm have the best verses along with Napoleon's opening verse. I didn't know Noble had a verse on here, but he did decent. This beat is somethin' deep, like a twilight zone type beat with its bells ringin', which makes this song sound more grimey & dark. So its still good to listen to the bad CDQ version. I would've given this song a 5, but EDI couldn't really impress me.

3. Thug Nation 3.5/5
The intro of this beat is kinda war like, and so is the song, but the layer of the beat during the first bars just doesn't sound good to. It sounds kinda like a sappy version of Troublesome '96. Not bad though. The verse by Napoleon & Kastro really make this song. (Napoleon use to rap a lil' swifter).

4. Souljah Story Part2 4.5/5
After Komatose, this is the next best track. The intro Kastro gives is real cool. Then he comes and delivers one of his verses of the album. (And my can't get no colder!) Then Napoleon comes decent as well. After that, you would think it was a recycled verse from Pacs version, but I think it was re-record by Kastro maybe because it doesn't match Pacs flow in his version.

5. Whats Comes Around, Goes Around 3/5
This track is good, but nothing special. You could tell it samples an instrument from Pac's Thug Style. Surprisingly, EDI drops a tight verse, which is rare to me. So does Napoleon. Not too much to say about this track though.

6. Retribution ft Val Young 4/5
War type song to me. Kastro rips his verse to pieces, going all out, talkin' bout a retribution. Napoleon also takes control of this song by applying to his lost flow. Real quick and informative. The hook is tight as well

7. Still Mournin' 5/5
This is were the album sounds like a mixtape after a shoutout by Method Man. Anyways, most of us heard this track. For those who haven't this, imagine Hail Mary being turned in a mourning type track and no Pac. Which ever picture I painted for you, this track really does stand out. This is the 1st time hearing Kadafi on the album an unsurprisingly drops somethin' for the history books. Scream his verse, you can feel his pain. Then...Kastro delivers another tight verse, staying consistent on the album with his delivery.

8. Bless My Soul ft Bad Azz and Prince Ital Joe 5/5
The intro to this song lets you know this track was gonna be tight. From EDI's la la la intro to the female singing "Bless My Souuulll" in the outro. In between, Napoleon, Kastro, Young Noble, BAD AZZ and EDI come real smooth, especially Bad Azz. The beat and the singing gives this track a dark feeling.

9. Novakane 4/5
This beat is one of the more laid back tracks of the album. The 1st verse by Kastro usually is the only reason I used to listen listen to this track (Walkin' talkin to my homies, with a bullet in head!!!) But with the better CDQ, it's more listenable now. Noble comes deep to. EDI messes up the track for me and I usually wanna skip to the next track. But the verse by Kastro and Noble and the beat make this song feel like "novakane".

10. Under Pressure Part2 5/5
Although nowhere near to sounding like Pac and Stretch's version, The Outlawz make love to this track; each one. Once again, like in Komatose, Kastro and Storm have the best verses on here in my opinion. This will be the 2nd and last time you'll hear Storm. Sad because it's like shes a female version of Pac with the vocab and flow she has. But still, even Noble and EDI have great verse. The beat is real depressing which fit the song. Kastro also gives us a "fuck the world" type hook. Damn, Kastro rules this album...

11. Pass The Heat ft Wack Deuce 3/5
Following Under Pressure P2, this track doesn't really feel right listening to me. This is actually "Wipin Niggaz Off Tha Map". Some disses are shoot at JayZ and other Pac enemies. It's a grimey New Yorkish type track but Fatal owns this track, with the other outlawz, not including Wack Deuce, sounding average. This is the only track I'll skip sometimes. The only way I'll listen to this track is because of Fatal, which is 1 of his 2 appeareances on the album.

12. Angel 4.5/5
Every Outlaw delivers a great verse, including EDI's angry sound verse. The beat, I think, makes this track. It's hard, but in some sort of way jazzy.Napoleon and Kastro has the best verse in this and you already know why. The hook sang by a female makes this a laidback track as a matter of fact. It's tight how the girl sings the hook from BIGs "Missin' U". But nice song.

13. Hold On 4.5/5
Excellent work by all the Outlawz. The beat is reminiscent of As The World Turns on the Outlawz Still I Rise album, only another hook by an unknown female singing in it. I love this hook. Napoleon delivers a heartfelt verse. I wish Pac would've rapped on this cuz this beat has his signiture all over it. Hold On is the most uplifting song on here with it's piano keys

14. Stay Awake 5/5
What can I say about this? I LOVE this track. The intro by a speaker 1st gives us something to think about then with Kadafi with his intro. This is probably my favorite outlaw song because the beat and the verses by the outlawz are real intelligent, laidback and sad. Kastro has the best verse (kissin' his kitchen floor) as always. This track is so amazing Pac didn't even have to rap on this, although I obvious wish he would of, including Kadafi. I can't explain how much I love this "blues" type track...

15. Family Picturez 5/5
Even though EDI recycles the beginning of his verse from High Speed, this song makes me think that this couls also be my favorite outlaw track. The beat kinda sounds like it was produce by DJ Quik, sounding like a laidback oldschool feel. Every outlaw blew me away with is track, most noteable Kastro and the 2nd siting of Kadafi. Even though the idea of Noble doing a hook is awful, Noble sings one of the best hooks on the album, reminiscin' of his family pictures. This track is one of the best tracks on the album.

16. In God Eyes 5/5
This song is real sad to me because the beat reminds you of a lot of bad times in life. The lyrics of the Outlawz here are all about survivin' and being souljahs in Godz Eyez. Though the intro might affend some white people, I feel this is a revolution ode for peace and equality in the society of oppression. The best concept on the album. Kastro as you know opens with a tight verse, but all the verses by the Outlawz are heartfelt and moving for many reasons on this track. Like Stay Awake and Family Picture, I LOVE this track and the way the Outlawz did it, including the hook.

17. The Hunger ft Wack Deuce 4/5
Not as moving as the previous tracks, but this track still stands out to me. The hook rapped by the Lawz and some female are tight. And Kastro really shines on this...ok...I want talk about how Kastro rips every song, but does. Noble flows real well on this as well. This track really has you thinkin' with a soldier mentality, indeed making you acknowledge your hunger to survive. Tight concept, and once again, tight hook by the female. Wack Deuce also rips his verse. I never heard of him but he sounds real tight to me.

18. Mr. Makaveli 4.5/5
Noble and Kadafi open this real nice dedicating to Pac. The beat in this is battlefield type but I feel like its missing something. But the verses and the hook makes up for that. This is ths track Fatal completely shines on, even over Kastro and Kadafi. Like the other review states, he sums up the feelings of the Outlawz after Pac died.

19. Outro WTF
What a way to end an album. Terrible outro

In conclusion, the day I got this album in the mail and put it into my CD player, I loved this album. I think I went 3 or 4 days without taking it out cuz I wanted memorize the very intelligent lyrics the Outlawz gave on here. It's an emotional type able, well the 2nd half is, with the 1st being more angry and militant. Bottom line, even a true pac fan would love this album. Best to be released in 06 in my opinion. Too bad the outlawz don't rap like this anymore. EDI usually always sucked to me, rarely giving tight verses. Noble kinda went down hill but I see him coming back up. Kastro changed his voice, so he can't have the same flow he had on this album. Napoleon on the Until The End Of Time and Better Dayz era wasn't good to me, but he remained at least average at times. Ne never sucked. Too bad Fatal, Kadafi and Storm were barely on 3 tracks. I consider them, with Kastro, the best of the Outlawz.

Bottom line:This CD caught my ass off guard lol
