Film & TV Non-Hollywood Cinema

I wanted to make a thread about this cuz I love movies that don't necessarily come from Hollywood and I'm really tired of stupid horror and science-fiction films that almost everyone sees but have awful stories. Cinema is a kind of art, despite sometimes is just a way of making money. Ok, I know there are lots of excellent hollywood movies but there are lots from other countries rather than the usa or independent films that aren't advertised so much, but have very clever scripts instead of huge budgets and great special effects.

One example is Pieces of April, that movie had excellent performances and a charming story, and it was an indepent film. But at least in Argentina, nobody saw it.

And talking about international movies, I think French cinema is the best by far. Amelie, Les Choriestes, 8 Femme, L'Emploi du temps, La Fleur du mal, and the lists goes on. I just love them, all of them are so emotional and make you think a lot about many topics. Italian cinema is preety good too, I cried a lot when I saw La vita e bella.

So post your favourite international and independent movies here, I think they deserve a little more recognition. (sorry if a thread like this was made before)

i hear what you are saying. i'm tired of the remake movies with 50 millions dollar budgets, that only a hand full of people know is a remake. for instance, the ladykillers (not 50 million dollar movie but you can get the idea), mr and mrs. smith.

hollywood has lost the art of movie making. they have lost the art of telling a story. i watch more independant films with no name actors than i do with big name actors. i hate most big name actors. tom cruise, russel crowe, what makes those dumb ass so great. they arent great actors.

i wish i could comment on foreign films, but we dont get any at all over here. its dumb. i wish we did. i would love to watch some. the only ones we get are the jet li films.

La Bella Vita - Italy

No Man's Land - Bosnian/Croatian

Both great movies.

No Man's Land is hilarious at certain parts (if your Balkan you'll understand it even more) even if it's a drama, get real sad at some parts.

That is exactly what I think, speccially when you mention no name actors. There are many great actors who aren't well-known, but sometimes they are better than the ones we are tired of seeing in every movie, and yeah, russel crowe is an example.

But the problem is that they don't get enough publicity, and I understand you when you say you don't get many foreign films cuz it happens the same here, you have to go to certain cinemas to watch them. I know that with the internet you can get any movie you want, but if if the media doesn't mention at least some of them, it's very difficult to know what movies have been recently made, which ones will be on theaters soon and that kind of stuff, and consequently, it's very difficult to become interested in them. It happens to me very often, I have to read about movies on the newspaper and then I decide if I watch them or not, it's not as simple as downloading the first thing that appears on ares. So I think the media has a huge impact on what we watch or not, and that's why millions end up watching Van Helsing (lol, I'm not sure if that's the one I hated so much), and even worse, liking it.

Btw, thx for the link calcuo
and I didn't see No Man's Land, but I'll try to rent it

i'm sitting behind prehistoric dail up. :(

missy- you have no idea how many times i have been around people, either from work or my old roommates who only know actors like russel crowe , tom cruise, ben stiller types. coultless of times i have mentioned a movie only a hand full of people have seen, that has a great actors or actress in the film, and no one knows what/who the hell i am talking about.

i have yet to meet one person outside the internet who has seen the machinist or city of god

there are some big name actors/actresses that make bank and are good at what they do. denzel washington for example. i always hear everyone say "trainging day is his best movie, he won awards for his role". i think his best film was malcolm x. his acting was far greater than his performance in training day.

Ya, I've seen those 2 also, but I didn't add them cause I doubt she'd find them anywhere. You have to hit like the balkan ghettos for that shit. lol

Never found 'Pretty Village Pretty Flame' at BB. My uncle's friend had to lend it to me.

No man's land I've seen there recently though, but only reason it's there is because it won an oscar.

that's exactly what happens to me all the time, for some reason it's very difficult to find in real life people who know just the title of some movies I really like :( And whenever I try to invite a friend to the cinema to see one of them I end up going with my dad or watching spiderman 2.

and I've never heard of 'Pretty Village Pretty Flame'... I'll try to find it at bb but I doubt I'll find, though No Man's Land is there for sure. I promise I'll watch it this weekend!
