Film & TV Mike Epps Has Some Harsh Words For Dave Chappelle

I suppose everyone has their theories about what happened to Dave Chapelle in the weeks leading up to the delay of the third season of Chappelle's Show and his now infamous trip to Africa.

At a recent press day for The Honeymooners, comedian Mike Epps took it a step further, committing his opinion to record in front of a room full of journalists in which IGN FilmForce was present.

The subject came up when Epps mentioned his worries about playing Richard Pryor in a potential upcoming project directed by Walter Hill. Someone asked whether his stress compared to Chappelle's and Epps laughed, snapping into a response. "You know, coming from where I come from, I'm already crazy. S**t. You ain't got to worry about me going. I'm crazy, straight up. I done seen the psychiatrist, I been on the little pills or whatever they got. You know what I'm saying? I'm for real. He just goin' through some new s**t. This is him going through his. I thank God I been through mine at an early age. Going through it and being on drugs. I went crazy after Next Friday because certain things overwhelm us, man. That's overwhelming…

"I don't think he came from the background I came from. I don't think that. But my background. Everything around me is failure. You know what I mean? Trash in the alley. I got eight brothers and we all got damn near different daddies. I come from a real welfare family, you know mother struggling. My grandmother was the same way… So that alone, for you to come out in Hollywood and get in a movie will overwhelm the s**t out of you, if you from that. Now, you give me 50 million dollars, I ain't gonna go crazy. I'm gonna go to the mall and go and get some new cars, I'm about to go and put my momma in a new house, I'm about to give some of these kids in the community some money. That's all he should have did… Just give some of that money to the kids, and that will bring you right back… You'll realize that that's what that's for, is to share it, and you won't go crazy.

"The thing about it is, the material he was doing wasn't him. He don't come from no crackheads on the streets and s**t. You can't talk about black people like that and you don't even represent that. You don't come into the community and kick it with black kids. You got white writers on your show. You got white boys writing, talking about black people on the show, you know what I'm saying? You got Oprah lashing out at him. Not only that, you got people comparing him to Richard Pryor, so once you got that on you right there, and you ain't even came from what Richard Pryor came from, it look like you done tricked a bunch of motherf******, that's what it look like, and now you can't follow yourself, because you got that material from some other people. Charlie Murphy and them did all that. I remember the show blowing up from, 'I'm rich, bitch' and James Brown and Rick James and all that.

"What I really think, true heart to heart, is that you only as good as your last s**t. That go for me, Cedric [the Entertainer], everybody in this business. You only as good as your last s**t. If you do good the last time I see you, I'm still good with you, but you gotta follow everything you do…"

Sounds like jealousy to me, he's mad that Chappelle's a bigger star than he is. He doesn't seem to get it. It's not as though they just gave Dave 50 million dollars and said "here you go, merry christmas!" There are expectations that come with that kind of money, and that would put immense pressure on anyone

ha.. funny coming from a guy who's been in fuck all.

The Friday movies? so what.. How High? Big deal... a voice in Dr.Dolittle 2... lol

Come on... just cause he'll star as Richard Pryor, doesn't give the guy the right to bad talk someone else... specially someone like Chappelle

Peace

Whoever compared Prior to Chapelle need to review Prior's work.

Richard Prior comedic style gave birth to most of the big-time comedians now. Nobody had the guts to be raw like Prior at the time, all the others are just following up on him.

Chapelle is good. No doubt, but nowhere close to Prior, and cmon now, you know alot of you laugh because of his voice and the way he says things. lol, don't lie now. :D

Chappelle is great, hilarious show, but his stand up isn't that amazing, he tends to mumble a lot in the stand-up I've seen, and his host segments on the show.

I like Mike Epps, he kept the Friday series going, All About the Benjamins was a good movie, and he can be a scene-stealer at times, in movies like 3 Strikes, where he's only in it for 30 seconds.

With that said, The Honeymooners looks like a fucking trainwreck.

Mike Epps is fucking hilarious, dont hate, he might be a tad jealous but at the end the day the mans hilarious.

Him and Dave are on the same level to me.

Daves standup Vs Mikes standup = same level
Daves skits Vs Mikes movie appearences = same level

as Flip said, NO ONE IS ON PRYORS LEVEL.

Other than your spelling, you're spot on.

Pryor is a legend, Chappelle isn't on that level.

Epps is right. He gave his opinion & it's true, Pryor had the right to speak about certain shit because he'd went through it, if Chappelle is talking about shit he never went through he should take the criticism humbly.

I Have To Agree With Epps But You People Are Hating Not Even Listening To What Hes Sayin He Just Keeping It Real. Pressure Aside Dave Chappelle Should Still Produce Thats What He Gets Paid For If He Can't Handle It Then Maybe He Should Just Quit. Oh I'm Sorry Lets Not Say Anything Bad About Dave Chappelle A Man Whos Show Is Only funny Because Of Paul Mooney And Charlie Murphy His Writers. :p

don't hate the mans opinion about dave, they asked his opinion and he gave it.

Now if he would of gone off on him for no reason, then yeah talk shit
He didnt really answer the question though, it was a comparison which he decided to use as his chance to lash out at Dave. I dont really know enough about Dave to know whether Epps is right or not but kicking a guy when his down isnt right.
What happened to him anyway, is it drugs?

first - several of you knocked epps movie career. ok now before the chappelle show, what has dave done so ground breaking? half baked? that movie came out on a friday and was on video sunday. and trust me, ive been following dave's career since robin hood men in tights, he's funny to me. however he's only had partial parts in flicks..
Ive seen epps live and that nigga really is crazy..he came out on stage completely high and 25 mins late...but he was funny from beginning to end.

the other stuff he was saying is kinda true which is why it bothers me. first, the funniest stuff from dave is other peoples storys and ideas. secondly i dont know how comfortable i am with the level of racism thats in the show, written by white people- and imagine dave sitting back laughing at black culture by a white guy that telling it..thats not right.

but over all besides the tv show, chappelles movie career isnt nearly on the same level as epps. before his show hit, most people didnt know who he was, but the majority could recognise dayday in anything he was in.
