A flight from London to Washington has been diverted to Boston after a mid-air security scare.

A female passenger on United Flight 923 was reportedly found carrying a screwdriver, vaseline and matches - and a note about terror group al Qaeda.

A United spokesman said a passenger had been spotted engaging in some "suspicious" activity.

A US government official told CNN that the woman had two notes, one in English mentioning al Qaeda and another in Arabic.

She was being questioned by the FBI, the network said.

Local news channel WHDH claimed the woman had been tied up and kept at the back of the plane.

State Police took control of the plane after it landed.

All the passengers have been taken off the plane and their carry-on luggage is being checked by sniffer dogs on the runway.

A United Airlines spokesman said the captain had declared a security emergency.

"There was an altercation with at least one female passenger," he said.

"The plane is safely on the ground in Boston. The crew assessed the situation and determined that a divert was the appropriate course of action."

The incident comes days after British authorities claimed to have foiled a terror plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights from London to the US.

Heres what it says at CNN.com.

A totally different version of events!

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Fighter jets escorted a London-to-Washington, D.C., flight to Boston's Logan airport Wednesday after the pilot declared an emergency because an apparently claustrophobic passenger caused a disturbance, a federal official said.

The federal security official said there was no indication of terrorism and denied reports that the woman had a screw driver, matches and a note referring to al-Qaeda.

The female passenger aboard United Flight 923 said she was claustrophobic and became very upset and got into some kind of confrontation with the flight crew, said George Naccara, federal security director for the Transportation Security Administration for Massachusetts' airport.

The disturbance -- coming just a week after authorities in London said they foiled a terror plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights -- was enough to concern the pilot to issue an alert, which activated two fighter jets to escort the flight into Logan, Naccara said.

Naccara said he did not believe any items she was carrying were the cause of the outburst. An airport spokesman previously said the woman was carrying lotion, a screw driver and matches, but backed off the statement, and Naccara said it wasn't true.

"I don't know what she had on board with her, but we have been told she did not have a screw driver, she did not have any liquids such as vaseline, and any notebook she may have had, it did not contain an al-Qaeda reference," Naccara said. "This is still playing out, of course."

"There was speculation in the beginning of all those items, but those have been proven untrue," he said. He said he had no information about matches.

The flight from London's Heathrow Airport to Washington's Dulles Airport had 182 passengers and 12 crew members, UAL Corp. spokesman Brandon Borrman said.

State Police and federal agencies took control of the plane after it landed.

Passengers were taken off the plane and loaded onto a bus, and Naccara said the passengers were being interviewed. Their luggage was spread out on the tarmac, where it was rechecked by security officials and trained dogs.

Since the foiled terror plot surfaced in London last week, airports have tightened security in both the United Kingdom and the U.S. Liquids and gels have been banned from carry-on luggage, and even tighter restrictions are in place in the UK.

well its not fake, i can see it on the news live, but it sounds sort of odd. how the hell did she get on the plane with those items?

edit": lol, skynews a little quick to jump the gun?

Seems she was having a panic attack and tried to go to the toilet in the middle of the plane;

The fallout from the foiled of an alleged terror plot is continuing both in Britain and across the Atlantic.

A claustrophobic woman sparked a security alert after panicking on a Washington-bound flight from Heathrow.

The airliner had to make an emergency landing in Boston.

There were initial reports the woman on United Flight 923 was found carrying a screwdriver, vaseline and matches - and a note about terror group al Qaeda.

But US security officials later denied this.

The alert follows a series of major security scares since British police said they foiled a plot to blow up planes heading from London to the United States.

A terminal at a port in Seattle was also evacuated after two cargo containers alerted bomb sniffer dogs.

Authorities found no explosives or chemical or biological agents in the containers from Pakistan.

Back in the UK, British Airways' schedule was nearly back to normal after the bomb plot spurred time-consuming security checks at airports.

The airline has cancelled 19 flights at Heathrow but said all its Gatwick flights will run.

At other airports around the UK, including Stansted, Glasgow and Edinburgh, the majority of flights are operating as normal.

But passengers are being advised to arrive early and expect delays as a result of the stringent security checks.

Meanwhile, detectives investigating the alleged plot to blow up planes with liquid explosives have been granted more time to quiz 23 suspects.

The Metropolitan Police can detain 21 people until August 23, and two until August 21, a spokesman said.

Scotland Yard later said a person arrested in the Thames Valley area on Tuesday has been released without charge.
