Say if i was to program a beat using a MPD16 (same as an mpc just the really simple version)

how would i use the metronome to keep me intime? do i hit a kick each time it ticks? or waaa? i dunno lol!

pZ

you do know what a metronome is used for right?
its just there to help you keep rhythm, the beat count, and your bpm
you could hit the snare or kick on every click but you dont have too.
if your just doing a basick 4/4 count and the metronome clicks,
1 2 3 4 , you could do for example
K S K S

or
1 2 3 4
KKS K SS

just remember its really just to help you keep rhythm and your timing down

if you're using electronic tools, you don't really need a metronome since you don't have to worry about a computer drifting offbeat. if you're adding analog or live sounds in then yes, they can be useful. these days metronomes are mainly just used by artists as they write lyrics to keep them hitting the snares.

appreciate your reply but how do i use one? lol im going to be using a mpc style peice of equip and hit the pads creating my own pattern? and so i need the metronome to keep time? so when should i hit a pad? is it just every snare must fall on a tick?

well, if you have a sense of rhythm then surely you can make one to four bars of a drum pattern onbeat without a metronome. in fact, a lot of times people get throw off by them because they start anticipating metronome strikes instead of just following the natural rhythm.

like puff said, a metronome is just a timing device. use it to tick on anything you want - be it end of bar, cuts, digs, whatever. when it comes down to it if you're using a mpc then it technically shouldn't let you introduce samples offbeat, so i odn't really see your insistance in wanting to use a metronome. just tap out eigth notes and you'll be fine.
