I've been wondering lately - there are so many decent mc's in squads that are not directly hip-hop. I'm sure eveyone knows some and wondered like - damn, why won't they go solo, they would sell a lot. There are pop or even metal groups that have them but in those groups they are usually in the background.
One example would be Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park/ Fort Minor. He can seriously molest a track killing even experienced, dope rappers. Not to mention that his lyrics are intelligent and well written. There are many of songs and his verses that prove so and some are on my mind right now.

I am pretty sure Fort minor has an album out or is releasing one.

They had one which was pretty amazing in my opinion. The point is that they are considered a different category. People don't think "hip-hop" when they think of Fort Minor. I think it's wrong because Mike Shinoda is really a good MC.

Kenji and Remember the name were quite groundbreaking tracks.
Where'd you go was more poppish and really sentimental but much more hip-hop than what we hear on the radio these days.
Right now was true hip-hop at it's finest - really, really rare in mainstream rap these days.

People do think hip-hop when they think of Fort Minor. But, the problem is, few people THINK of Fort Minor. Ya dig?

I skimmed the album, and then I skimmed it off my hard drive.

Yeah dude, The Rising Tied was fuckin sick. Back Home, Feels Like home, Right Now, Remember the Name, Kenji, Where'd you Go, Slip, Black to Red. All dope tracks that i remeber off the top of my head.

I think I'm pretty qualified to give an opinion on this one ;) ;)

Firstly, to Mr Mark Deez - Jonathan Davis is not a rapper. He is a singer. Sure, he has come close to rapping on a few tunes, but it's still more singing than anything else.

Secondly, there's been some good suggestions so far in this thread. Mike Shinoda is definately a dope MC.

But the winner in this has to be Zack De La Rocha (from Rage Against The Machine). Dude is ferocious on the mic!!!

I'd also like to mention Fred Durst. He may be somewhat of a douche, but he has skills and held his own against Method Man on "N 2 Gether Now" (a classic DJ Premier beat) and also the Swizz Beatz remix of "Rollin" with DMX, Redman and Meth.

'Significant Other' and 'Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water' are two classic albums IMO.
