Martial Arts

Tae Kwon do is just a good sport , nothing more. Its just the most marketed becuz its an olimpic sport ect.

A lot of TKD practitionaers would gnaw your ankles off for that lol TKD has become too commercialised and constrained. The watered-down stuff you learn in the west is a far cry from the military techniques used in Korea. As the major competition for the sport is the Olympics (which has endless rules and regulations, stripping the art form) most schools teach a form which fits this gi wearing game of tag.

I haven't trained for a while but have done Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing and a little MMA. I'm starting Muay Thai again in a few months.

i was kicked out of every tae kwon do tournament i entered because i was "too rough" for parrying someone's errant haymaker roundhouse kick and taking it to their centerline. kata doesn't make good fighters, kumite does.

First of all i did tread like this some time ago.
Secondly i've got alot to say in it :D
First of all i have to tell you that i'm training taekwondo ITF. I've got private trainings with my master who is most respected trainer in Poland.
I have to disagree to you're opinions on taekwondo.
First of all Taekwondo outside europe and Asia is on shitty level.
Second.. There are many styles of taekwondo like WTF, ITF,GTF etc
I suppose you're talking bout WTF when speaking bout fighting mostly with legs and do kata's all the time.
ITF is strictly battle, like kickboxing but on a higher level.
Polish ITF is the best in the world except Korea so maybe that's also why trainings may look a lot different. Ppl look at TKD like it's a sport where ppl kick each other etc. In ITF there are also grapples and everything u need to fight in short distance like knees and ankles. But i have to agree that it's the best in long range combat because there is no better unarmet martial arts when opponent is like 2m from you. I've sparred with many ppl from other martial arts and in long distance it was funny when i done everything i wanted with them and they didnt knew what to do. Fighting in elevators also are easy to win as the amount of grapples/knees we use is enough. Also what i have to add that it is not the martial art.. it's a fighter who is better or worse. And also reaaaally much depends on the trainer. I'm proud of mine. Peace

I'm also learning the Tae Kwon Do WTF, our basic element is to surprise the opponents with a shout; What the fuck?!?!?!?! then hit them in their balls.

WHAT?? There are no shouts in TKD

I think he means the Ki'ai or however you spell it. And the training you do in TKD seems to be VERY different from that of many clubs around the world. As most major and recognised TKD tournaments (eg the Olympics) use the point scoring system, most clubs train in this style of "combat". In reality the fight resembles to pyjama'd clowns tagging each other, but as you say this is not the "original" TKD.

At the end of the day the victor of a fight is the one who is luckier or is able to adapt to the rule set quicker. In a full blown fight a MMA fighter would possibly be better but in a fight where there are no grapples, minimal punches and flashy kicks a TKD practitioner would be favourite.

Yeah thats true. We have grapples but only the most simple ones.
On the Olympics there is TKD WTF. Original TKD is ITF and it isn't Olympic sport. People from ITF usually start in Kickboxing/Muay Thai tournaments. There are 3 forms of tournaments in ITF: Strenght (breaking objects etc.), Kata (making stupid things in planed sequences) and finally full contact battle (it is most popular). We train Katas only before tests on higher "colors".
Also i have to add that original Taekwondo is MUCH different from what i see in foreign schools or seminaries or tournaments. PPl there jump like idiots making jump kicks using hands only to block.
My trainer was perfecting his skills under the eye of original creator of taekwondo - General Choi Hong Hi and got his blessings to train cats just like he did.

WTF - World Taekwondo Federation

I've got a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do - done since I was 7

I've got a purple Belt in Ed Parker American Kenpo - taught a class

I was on the Army boxing team

and while in the Army I learned about a year worth of Brazilian Ju Jitsu

So basically I'm a street fighter...2003 barfight champion : undisputed

naw dawg..im well into my 20's now i have no patience for TKD anymore..With what I learned else where, fighting TKD style and fighters is boring now..especially with the kenpo stuff ..

ya u took the American kenpo(the watered down version). Take the real shyt.

watered down? what is the real version? this stuff I learned was some brutal stuff as is..whats left just stabbing people ?

you know what sorry i put it the wrong way. Not necessarily “watered down”, just trimmed. The American version has a lot less moves to learn , in it in order to achieve the black belt status or grade. U still know more then 70% of the population and most likely beat sum1s ass , but at the end of the day you didn’t get the full version. Ask ur sensei he will tell you.

There is knife and gun disarming techniques too , so ya thats sumthing ur prolly missing 2.

None of these can compete with MuayThai, so dont argue about whats second or third best. It doesnt make sense.
what makes you think that muay thai is good
Its just popular. Plus its not safe for the one using it.I've seen many situations when ppl kicking just broke theyre leg. Most stupid thing init is that u dont kick with feet.
I've had sparing with many muay thai students and they were nothing great. Theyre biggest strenght is hard trainings.
I've been on few. I've considered tostudy muay thai but when i saw that many techniques aren't too perfect and at last not too healthy i declined.
Of course they do nice low kicks and ankle/knee fight but it rarely comes in use. During fights they already get a KO before they can come close

What you are saying about kenpo is pretty true. So far I learned a handful of knife / gun disarms, but waaay more multiple attacker stuff.
I have a question that always comes up in forums. Why do people jock Kick boxing? I fought a kick boxer and it was ok but nothing super spectacular. I think Kenpo is the best street fighting / hand to hand style, at least to me. People that watch UFC love kick boxing because thats what they jock..what do ya'll think?
