February 4, 2005 -- The Knicks haven't done such a good job as shotmakers this season — so they're trying their hand as matchmakers.
Dead last in their division, the Knicks are pulling out all the stops and are resorting to speed dating to get fans in the seats at Madison Square Garden.
For 55 bucks, fans of the opposite sex — not necessarily of basketball — can attend the Feb. 13 game against the Charlotte Bobcats and try to meet a hottie at the "Knicks Singles Night with the Knicks" event.
"This doesn't sound like a good idea," said long-time fan Mike Criscuolo, 33.
But on second thought, he added, "They're doing so badly that maybe it is a good idea. They're not worth watching anyway."
The Knicks' latest marketing plan is to have date-seekers meet before tipoff for a mixer with food and drink organized by Gothamist.com.
And after the ball's in play, the men and women can chat it up until the end of the quarter, when the men move to another section to meet a new bunch of prospects. After the game there's more drinks, entertainment and prizes. In a not-so-subtle hint, the event publicity reads, "After that, it's up to you
As an added incentive, two couples will win a Valentine's Day trip to Philadelphia's Wachovia Center to see the Knicks take on the 76ers.
"We're always looking for different ways to encourage more people to come out," said Anucha Browne Sanders of the Knicks' marketing team. "It's a wonderful opportunity for singles to meet."
The Knicks' opponents on the 13th, the expansion Bobcats, were unaware of the game-time matchmaking event — but sympathized. "The Knicks are the ones who are trying to get people excited about a team that's not doing well," said an official with the Bobcats, who have an even worse record than the Knicks."
